Bishop McNamara got off to a slow start as a team, but that was no fault of Sophomore G/F Vanessa Harris Vanessa Harris 5’10” | CG Bishop McNamara | 2025 State MD . Harris got off to a great start finding open space to cut into receiving passes and finishing open layups. She’s an outstanding athlete, and coupling that with her ability to cut it makes her solid off the ball. Harris also hit a few open catch and shoot jump shots, adding to her off-the-ball game.
The first thing that always pops out at me when I watch Qadence Samuels Qadence Samuels 6’2″ | SF Bishop McNamara | 2023 State MD is how great her shot looks. She has no wasted motion, and her Length allows her to get her shot up over hard-closing defenders. The Bishop McNamara defense was suffocating all day, and Samuels was a big part of that. She was super active all day and intense, especially in the second half. Her grittiness and passion, mixed with her skill, is why she’s one of the best players in Maryland.
PVI’s offense was out of sorts for a lot of the game, and the main reason the game was competitive was because of Louis Volker Louis Volker 6’0″ | SF Paul VI | 2023 State VA . Volker showed off her versatility as a scorer making crafty moves around the rim and stepping out to knock down some jump shots. As the game wore on, she became more of a focus of Bishop McNamara, and they started to collapse on her and make life difficult. But to me, that’s a testament to how good she is. To draw that kind of respect on a team with as much talent as PVI speaks volumes about how good she is.
Madisen McDaniel Madisen McDaniel 5’9″ | PG Bishop McNamara | 2024 State MD is everything you want out of a PG. She’s quick, a terrific ball-handler, and a fantastic passer. The whole game McDaniel was in attack mode, and her quickness allowed her to get to the rim and get fouled. She found open teammates and was the key to Bishop McNamara’s trap they used to stifle PVI.
In every player evaluation I did for Bishop McNamara against PVI, I’ve mentioned their defense because I can’t stress enough how tough they were on that side of the ball. PVI scored only 14 points in the second half. Bishop McNamara is good defensively for several reasons. The two biggest ones, though, were their Length and overall intensity. Zhen Craft Zhen Craft 6’2″ | SF Bishop McNamara | 2025 State MD exemplified both of those things to a high degree. She is 6’2″ and, with some help, made life difficult inside of PVI. Craft’s jump shot has improved dramatically, and it looks clean now. She moves well for her size, making her impactful and versatile as a wing/post player. She’s only a sophomore, so she will be someone to look out for in the coming years.
