Continue ReadingThe future of Kentucky girl’s basketball is extremely bright. There are a lot of middle school players that are contributing valuable minutes for their high school teams. In Kentucky, the earliest you can play up is as a 7th grader. We are seeing some of these newcomers already making a big difference for their Varsity teams. Let’s look at some of the 2028 players making big impacts on the court in Kentucky. (Please ignore the rnrn that is showing up before and after the video links at times)
Faith Mosley
Faith Mosley
Mosley has had to split time between her middle school team’s season and playing up at Western High School in Louisville. However, she has taken advantage of her opportunities at both levels. In 10 games with the Warriors, Mosley is averaging 24.4 PPG and 4 RPG. I don’t have all of the numbers, but she’s also been racking up multiple steals and assists. She has recently surpassed her career high twice, scoring 31 points and then 33 points.
Karlea Stanley
Karlea Stanley
Starting as a 7th grader is impressive in itself, but Stanley takes things a step further as she is actually her team’s leading scorer as well. The young floor general is averaging 15.1 PPG and 3 RPG while helping her team start the season with a 13-10 record. She was recently invited to the GYBC National Camp and is poised to continue putting up big time numbers. Stanley even has a shot to hit the 1,000 point mark at the Varsity level by the end of her 8th grade season, especially with her ability to score over defenders.

Takenzie Young
Takenzie Young
Like Mosley, Young has had a JCPS middle school schedule to keep up with while also playing up for Southern High School, so she hasn’t been able to play in all of their games, but she’s leading the way in the games where she has played. She’s averaging 13.2 PPG and 6.8 RPG. Notably, Young has been present for all 5 of Southern’s wins on the season (averaged 15.2 PPG in those 5 games). She is very versatile and can make a lot happen on both ends of the floor.

Maddi Frohnapfel
Maddi Frohnapfel
Frohnapfel had to transfer to Hazard at Christmas time due to a family situation, but the way she has been able to make an instant impact for them while also getting adjusted to a new school is very impressive. The Lady Bulldogs have a 8-2 record since she has suited up for them (5-5 record prior to her arrival). She is averaging 8.6 PPG and 1.9 RPG. She can score at all 3 levels and has deep range on her shot. She has recently been invited to the GYBC National Camp, Chris Paul Point Guard Camp, Blue Star 30, and will be traveling with the USA 14U Team to Portugal for the World Games.

Jeriko Castle
Jeriko Castle
Despite being young, Castle has been stuffing the stat sheet for Lexington Christian this season. She’s averaging a solid 7.3 PPG and 6.9 RPG in the 21 games she’s played in. She’s proven to be a reliable free throw shooter and she connected on the only 3-pointer that she’s attempted this season.
LiLi Mangrum
LiLi Mangrum
Like some of the other players above, Mangrum has had to play for her middle school team while also playing for Male High School. Her role has continuously grown as the season has gone on and even when she doesn’t put up big numbers, she’s playing a huge role for the Bulldogs. Mangrum is averaging 5.4 PPG and 2 RPG, but in the last 3 games that I am able to see on KHSAA, she has dropped 16, 16, and 12 points respectively. She’s a high level player who is going to make some big waves on the court throughout her basketball career.

Addy Abrell
Addy Abrell
Russell County’s Abrell has really shown a ton of potential this season. She is doing exactly what you want to see from your floor general, leading the team in assists. However, she has also been one of her team’s leading scorers and defenders. She is averaging 5.4 PPG and 2.5 RPG. Abrell is a 3-level scorer who can finish some really tough shots around the basket.

You simply can’t teach size and with a 6’3″ frame, Maynard has excellent size for a 7th grader. However, she also has skills to go along with her size. She is Belfry’s 4th leading scorer at 3.9 PPG and their 2nd leading rebounder with 6.9 RPG. As she’s continued to get more comfortable, she’s really staring to come into her own and has been very close to notching a double-double, something that she’s sure to have lots of throughout her high school career.

Kyleigh Chestnut
Kyleigh Chestnut
Hard work has been paying off for Kyleigh Chestnut. While playing a bigger role on the JV level all season long, she has recently been thrust into some quality Varsity minutes for one of the top teams in the state in GRC. She’s averaging 3.7 PPG and 1.7 RPG. Recently, Chestnut scored in double figures for the first of what will likely be many times in the versatile guard’s career. She can certainly impact a game in big ways and will likely be a name you hear a lot over the next 5 years.
