This honor has given to all time Michigan greats like Tabitha Poole from Ann Arbor Huron, Allyssa DeHaan from Grandville and Rickea Jackson from Detroit Edison. Let’s take a look at each of the 5 finalists.
Ham is a terrific player that has earned the right to sit at the table of finalists. The Georgetown commit is averaging just shy of 20 points per game and is very close to averaging a double-double with points and rebounds. Ham is a smooth and athletic wing that can make plays on both ends of the floor. She uses her length well on defense, suffocating offensive opponents. Ham is terrific in the open floor, both filling a wing and leading the break. In true Wayne Memorial style, she plays with a high basketball IQ.
Carson was just destined to be here. The future Buckeye fought through injuries and has battled to become the best basketball player that she can be. Carson has accomplished that goal with a red hot senior season. Her stat lines look like video game numbers sometimes. While Carson dominates that paint with power like no other in the state, that’s really just the beginning of her game. She has range on her jumper and is a very underrated passer. Carson has great court vision and can feed the post as well as find open shooters with the pass when she has the ball on the perimeter.
Dykstra had me more than sold on her game with the way she played late season and in the playoffs last year. But she didn’t stop there. Dykstra has continued that play, and even enhanced it, leading her team to an undefeated regular season. She has the ability to lead her team to a state title. Dykstra is a true point guard in every sense of the word. She can handle the ball, find teammates in scoring position, as well as get buckets when her team needs them. Her best quality as a player may be her all around feel for the game and decision making.
Brown is a flat out star. Everything is there and in front of her because of the work that she’s put in. Brown has tremendous positional size and strength and really looks college ready. She rebounds well off the perimeter with strong hands and speed to the ball. It felt like if she needed or wanted to, Brown could have averaged 30 plus points a game this season. She has long strides that help her push the pace with ease. The University commit belongs with the finalists and has a very real shot of going home with the trophy.
Blair is one of those players that the more you watch them play, the more you can really appreciate what your eyes are seeing. Sometimes she makes it look so easy, when really it’s not. It takes a truly special athlete and basketball player to make the plays that she does. Blair is a threat to score as soon as she opens the door to the gym. She has the next mode offensively that most players can never hit. Blair can flat out take over a game offensively. She’s a true 3 level scorer that can use positional power as well as finesse.
