Take the ball to the hoop, hoop!” The following athletes do an excellent job of just that: handling the rock and getting the ball through the hoop. Let’s take a look at some sophomores you should see.
Elle Stone Elle Stone 5’10” | CG Mallard Creek | 2025 State NC has certainly made her name known throughout North Carolina in her first year in the hoop state. She handles the ball well using long strides to get past her opponents pushing the ball up the court. She knows how to find the openings for herself to pull up around the perimeter or use her ball moves to get to the basket and score some points. She moves well making adjustments to get the pass to her teammates in the paint. Her length is certainly an asset on defense blocking the path of her opponents.
Jasmine Nivar Jasmine Nivar 5’6″ | SG Apex Friendship | 2025 State NC had a strong high school season really stepping up for her team showing a lot of leadership handling the ball and making some smart shots. She knows how to find the openings and knock down shots from deep even with people closing out on her. She is quick with her decision making knowing when to explode up the court and hit her defender with a jump stop or take it all the way to the hoop. She jumps into passing lanes or strips the ball from her opponents grabbing the steal.
Jocelyne Grier Jocelyne Grier 5’8″ | CG Winston-Salem Christian National | 2025 State NC has been doing really well this season throwing the ball up longer distances and hitting their targets whether she is knocking down her shot from around the arc or she is getting a pass up the court to a teammate for some fast break points. She sees the floor well knowing how to make the perfect entry pass on the block, and she moves well without the ball losing the defense to get the open look. She’s quick with ball fakes even running full speed to create her own space to attack the basket.
Highlights
Breonna Roaf Breonna Roaf 5’7″ | PG Terry Sanford | 2025 State NC is another Lady Phoenix athlete who has been fitting right in dominating with her team this spring. With her high motor, she does well keeping her team in check with what tempo they need to be running against their opponent. She hustles up and down the court getting loose balls and even getting inside for rebounds. Her stroke from deep is fun to watch, and her handles allow her to move well with the ball attacking the gaps and shifting defenders.
When you watch Ashanti Fox Ashanti Fox 5’6″ | CG O’Neal | 2025 State NC play, it’s like you are watching muscle memory at work. There’s something about the way she moves fluidly and automatically into her shot from deep or even in the way she handles the ball. It just fits. Her moves to the basket like throwing in a little hesitation move throw off her defenders just enough for her to blow by them. She only seems to see the rim and doesn’t make any changes with upcoming contact. She makes good decisions knowing when to pull up or make the dish to her teammates.
Brooklyn Saunders Brooklyn Saunders 5’5″ | PG Butler | 2025 State NC is used to scoring double digits knocking down shots on all levels. She sees the floor well knowing how to find the openings, shift the defense, and knock down her shot from anywhere. She uses her handles to draw defenders to her in order to open up the court for her teammates hitting them in stride as they cut to the basket, or she makes adjustments to get them the best pass for the shot. She stays calculated on defense knowing exactly when to explode into the opening grabbing the pass on her way to some fast break points.
Christina Bowers Christina Bowers 5’8″ | CG Western Alamance | 2025 State NC has the versatility of a wing and the handles of a dominant point guard. She knows the perfect timing to show off her move in order to get by her defender and score some points at the rim, or she can make a smart dish to her teammates kicking it out to the perimeter for their own shot. Her ability to score on all levels is apparent, too. She does a little bit of everything getting inside for rebounds and even blocks shots on defense.
