I say this over and over, it’s about progression so these players I’m starting with have continued to elevate their games
Please note that I am dropping the 2027 Watchlist, not a ranking, of some of the TOP PLAYERS I have seen in the class, after the Texas Freshman Showcase in Carrolton TX on September 9th and if you haven’t registered, you can click on this link to do so. Please use COLSONPGH2023 for a discount
Bailey Burns Bailey Burns 6'0" | SF Lake Creek | 2027 State TX
Burns tickled me dropping the step back 3 and that is going to create some problems. I’ve written time and time again about her ability to shoot the long ball and how she’s added attacking the basket to utilize her size advantage over smaller guards yet I was overly impressed with the step back because it was done fluidly which is always a plus. Another plus is her realizing how to take the defender off the dribble and her reverse layups were very nice but to top everything off on the flip, she showed good timing to block, alter, and or deflect shots
Rachael Roberts Rachael Roberts 5'8" | SG The Woodlands | 2027 State TX
Roberts is handling the ball strongly in the open court under pressure and her crossover going full speed will be major in high school. Why asked the novice. It’s simple because not only can she drop the 3 ball, stop and pop included, but she also has solid court vision and can make on-the-money passes from 30-plus feet away. She does a good job creating her shot in the set, she attacks the basket strongly and finishes after contact but she also continues to impress me with her “on the ball” defense as well as using her quick hands for steals
Read THIS, from the start of the season to the finish, she has shown she understands how to take games over in the blink of an eye. I saw that coming years ago when I dropped #D1Lock in what seems like eons yet she has to have one of the best FLOATAS in Texas, all classes included and that. coupled with her body control as well as slight HEZ to get the defender to lean is going to create major problems for defenders. What adds to her options is that she sees the floor, and threads the needle in traffic, but she also can drop the mid to long-range jumper, with a hand in her face
Brooklyn Roberson
Roberson has shined in a couple of club basketball tournaments in multiple ways so nothing she does really surprises me at this stage. She’s strong and can take the defender off the dribble with either hand but peep this, she also finishes with either hand, after contact. She rebounds on both ends and can score on putbacks as well as in front of the basket but she also does a good job of using her size against smaller guards. She does a good job of not only creating her shot but knocking it down from outside
Alyssa Hams
Hams teamed up with Roberson in those club events and showed two important things, she could get hers “in the flow” and she could deliver “in the clutch” but just seeing her want the ball down the stretch is, well a plus. I love her upside because “she plays within herself” meaning she doesn’t try anything EXTRA, well other than putting out effort. Her deceptive first step is nice because it gets the defender to lean and that gives her options to either attack the basket and finish or drop the midrange jumper
