In the article below I am going to highlight some more teams, out of the same 3A class, that could be considered “sleepers”. Teams that, if they display a good connection early on in the season, others will need to be aware of them going into the playoffs.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Vinton-Shellsburg High School (19-8)
- Will not returning a starter from last season’s State Tournament roster.
- Will need to make up for losing 750 varsity shot attempts from a year ago, sole speaking about their starting lineup.
- This team will need to completely rebuild this season from a year ago. I think that they will fair decent overall on the year, having a more successful year then not but in the end, it’s going to be very tough for a group that has no varsity experience to dominate like a season ago.
- Vinton-Shellsburg always seems to be sitting around the State Playoff picture every season and I expect the same this year some how. Like I’m mentioned above, they will have to adjust and figure out what works with their new roster the best but I think it’s possible.
West Marshall High School (23-2)
- Returning 2/5 starters; accounting for 22.7 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 2.3 APG.
- Will need to make up for losing 690 varsity shot attempts from a year ago, sole speaking about their starting lineup.
- The lose of this teams three seniors is going to be a crucial part of their programs future. A roster that does return their #1 offensive shot taker in Bella Boros, is going to need to find some help this year putting the ball in the basket for the Trojans.
- The diverse play of this team a year ago is the reason the they made it all the way to the State Playoffs with a 23-2 record. This winter they are going to have to get creative and figure out a way to come up with some easy looks coming down the floor if they are going to want to be a “sleeper” team that wakes up during the Playoffs.
Williamsburg High School (5-17)
- Returning 3/5 starters; accounting for 34.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 6.3 APG.
- Will need to make up for losing 180 varsity shot attempts from a year ago, sole speaking about their starting lineup.
- Last season the record for this group could have been better but I’d like to chalk that up to a year of learning. A team that has two younger star players, currently going into their sophomore year in Carly Rich & Zoe Allen Zoe Allen 6'1" | PF Williamsburg | 2026 State IA , will have a better feel as to what to expect this season at the varsity level.
- Losing starters is never an easy situation but the roster that they will have this season will have more depth and more skill for most players that will see the floor in my opinion. With the offensive that they are trying to run and the fast pace that they like to play with, this winter looks bright for the Raiders right now.
Clarke High School (16-7)
- Returning 4/5 starters; accounting for 47.9 PPG, 20.8 RPG, 8.4 APG.
- Will need to make up for losing 275 varsity shot attempts from a year ago, solely speaking about their starting lineup.
- For a team that went 16-7 last year, to bring back basically all of your starters, including some of your bench is pretty impressive.
- This season is going to be much like the same as last season for the Indians. They should dominate most of their competition throughout their regular season schedule and jog into the playoffs. Once they get to that point is when things tighten up and they will have to show what they are made of. How will they do against skilled competition? Last year that was a big issue for them and I could see it going differently this time around.
