Continue ReadingIn front of college coaches from three states, scouts and high school and club coaches nearly 70 players from four states took the floor Sunday afternoon at the Farha YMCA courts in Andover to show off their game. After an hour of skill work the players broke into their eight teams and blew through three games. A tough time was had by this scout to scribble notes on as many players as possible. I failed to get a good look at every player but I saw plenty enough to generate a list of my standouts. With PGH Top 250 events coming up in Edmund, OK, September 24 and back at Andover, KS, Farha YMCA October 8, players have more opportunities to play coming up very quickly. Enjoy this list of players who I, with the help from some attending coaches comments, thought stood out.
Alisabeth Barton Alisabeth Barton 5'6" | PG Colby | 2025 State KS , PG, Colby, Magic Basketball , 2025 – Showed terrific speed and quickness but also handles off the bounce to get inside and fight for a score in traffic as well as to create a pass through the defense to a perimeter shooter. Good bounce. Showed three point shooting ability.
Hailey Contreras Hailey Contreras 5'5" | PG Liberal | 2024 State KS , 5’5″, PG, Liberal, Gameball Fusion, 2024 – A couple college coaches singled out Contreras’ floor generalship. And when one, who had never seen her before, commented that it was very clear the team was hers that impression cannot be taken lightly. Playing and being a point guard are two vastly different concepts. If that does not lock her into standout status alone then lets talk skill set. Contreras is very fast and quick and strong with the ball. She also showed the greatest, most consistent range of any player. We are talking volleyball line/30′ territory and she strokes it easily without any loading up.
Aniyah Harris Aniyah Harris 5'7" | PG Wichita Heights | 2026 State KS , 5’8″, PG, Wichita Heights, Southwest Elite, 2026 – The transfer from Wichita Southeast was game on. An athletic, fast, confident player Harris consistently puts consistent pressure on opponents on both ends of the floor. At times she was even relentless. A scorer at all three levels, only the stronger point guards could not get ate up with her half court footwork and hand speed. A coaching staff that had not seen her before strongly felt mid-major Division I caliber…and that’s with three seasons of high school ball to go.
Saliyah Henderson-Johnson Saliyah Henderson-Johnson 5'6" | PG Arkansas City | 2025 State KS , 5’7″, PG, Arkansas City, Central Kansas Elite /Cy Fair, 2025 – After a trudging, middling start Johnson stepped on the gas and did not let up the entire session. She showed quick feet and speed, terrific handles, and athleticism. Heard a lot of “who’s that?” from coaches.
Jenna Schmeidler Jenna Schmeidler 5'6" | PG Hays | 2028 KS , 5’5″, PG/SG, Hays, 2028 – Blessed with quickness and strong handles where Schmeidler is especially high caliber is in areas that large numbers of players never reach. The first was her terrific use of her peripheral vision to make decisions in traffic. The second, which was especially head turning for the attending college coaches, was her strong reads to get to the rim out of pick-and-roll situations. Other than being disappointed that she has to wait another year to play with Hays standout point guard Molly Martin Molly Martin 5'7" | CG Hays | 2025 State KS , Schmeidler should enjoy her “pick a number,” brief middle school season as she marks time to step into jersey with a high caliber club team.
Aja Spencer Aja Spencer 5'11" | CG Remington | 2024 State KS , 5’11”, SF, Remington, Wheat State Elite , 2024 – Spencer has grown into a very lengthy small forward with good athleticism and scoring ability around the hoop. Another player I got a lot of “do you know who number so-and-so is?” She consistently showed transition hustle and an ability to make and challenge shots.
Jaela Thompson Jaela Thompson 5'9" | CG McPherson | 2027 State KS , 5’9″, SF/CG, McPherson, Lady PGU, 2027 – Among the few players I saw that continually challenged Aniyah Harris Aniyah Harris 5'7" | PG Wichita Heights | 2026 State KS on both ends of the floor was this impact player for McPherson. I saw her play several times during the summer and from June forward all she did was get sharper, stronger, and more physical. Just what people know to expect out of a Bullpup. Thompson has strong handles and scoring ability. She is a burgeoning mid-range and perimeter shooter as well. I repeatedly had to tell coaches “yes, she really is a freshman.”
