The event has become known as hosting some of the best talent the state has to offer along with matchups of teams that could potentially see each other in the post season. We take a look at some names that stood out at the event.
This ‘pass-first’ PG has a true knack for distributing the basketball. She does a great job operating off the pick and roll and will diagnose the defense, then attack based on what they are giving her. She is very patient and does not turn the ball over a lot; which is exactly what you want out of your floor general. There were several key moments where she was able recognize where help defender came from and find the open teammate for layups or jumpers. You won’t find her making unselfish plays and coaches can trust her to facilitate the offense the correct way.
Jaida will have you scratching your head wondering how she is able to move on the court the way she does at her size. She has very nimble feet and defenders have difficulty staying in front of her when she lowers her body with a head of steam. She is excellent at directing traffic on the court and knows where everyone is supposed to be. She has well-above average passing abilities and she has a unique feel for the game. Though Jaida is a terrific scorer when she needs to be, she appears to embrace getting her teammates involved and doing what she needs to in order for them to get easy baskets. Terrific all-around true PG.
Hofstra is getting a very rare player in this defensive specialist. If you believe defense wins championships then Maddie Pounds is the player to watch. She does an unbelievable job in her ball denial as she does a great job keeping PG’s away from the ball and making them uncomfortable when they do get the ball. Excellent lateral quickness and she can meet her opponents at the point of attack which causes headaches for opponents who are looking to run the offense. She forces teams to consistently screen her off the PG in order for the PG to get any breathing room. She takes up space, very pesky and an absolute joy to watch if you enjoy old school, physical defense. However, don’t be fooled as Maddie can more than hold her own on the offensive end. Pounds averaged over 12 ppg last season for NC GBB and is a terrific guard who can get to the lane and finish.
Highlights
It’s been nearly 2 years since Kaylee played meaningful basketball following a serious knee injury. Saturday, she looked as if nothing ever happened. The East Tennessee State commit makes her team better when she is in the game. She has a very high IQ and understands the game at a different level than most. She will make the right pass, the right cut towards the basket or will simply execute the right play. She understands angles and floor spacing on both ends of the floor. The conference player of the year in the 2021-2022 season, Kaylee is sure to have an impactful season in her final season of high school basketball.
Molly Burns Molly Burns 5’7″ | CG Ardrey Kell | 2024 State NC has always been a dependable PG who can score and distribute the basketball. Saturday, she took things a step further as she showed signs of being the PG that can completely take over a game. During a morning contest, she commanded the ball from her teammates and went to work time after time. She was able to use her above-average ball handling abilities to get open and hit shots from deep with hands in her face. She forced the defense to double her to get the ball out of her hands and even then she was able to make plays. Molly also had the best pass that I’ve seen this year, as she lasered a bounce-pass through 2 defenders, into the hands of a teammate who was cutting toward the basket in the paint. Big time players, show up in crunch time and Molly absolutely showed up. After Saturday’s performance, Molly is certainly worthy of more attention on the recruitment trail. She may only be scratching the surface of what she can become over the next several years and there will be programs who are sure to miss out.
