Continue ReadingRiver Hill Coach Teresa Waters and her staff put together their annual play day the weekend of Thanksgiving with teams from multiple counties. The second session featured the hosts River Hill, Archbishop Spalding, CH Flowers, Damascus, Gwynn Park and Oxon Hill. The games were 20 minutes long and everything ran smoothly throughout the day. Here is a look at some of the prospects who caught my attention.
Chi Igwo
Chi Igwo
Chi had a good day overall. She is the ultimate glue player and she showed that by contributing in different ways. She was locked in on defense and hit the floor several times chasing loose balls. Her perimeter shot has improved since last season, and she looks more comfortable handling the ball and initiating the offense.
Whitley had her fingerprints all over the action today. She was a monster on the boards, using her size to control both ends of the court. Defensively she was a menace, blocking and altering shots all day. It wasn’t her best day on offense as she missed a few easy shots, but with improved footwork she will be able to rack up big scoring totals.
Highlights
Keira Mason
Keira Mason
This was my first time seeing Keira and I was impressed. She recently signed to play at St. Mary’s College and I think they got a steal. At 6’1″ she is versatile and active around the basket. She has a nice touch and showed off a nice mid-range game. She rebounded well and looks like she has all the tools to be a lock down defender at the next level.
Madison had a great day shooting the ball. She was knocking down shots from all over the court and her form looks really good. She showed off a tight handle and the ability to finish through contact. Her shot selection was good, and she looks like she is ready to make a big jump in her sophomore year in the IAAM.
Ava Redmond
Ava Redmond
Very poised freshman guard that plays with a lot of intensity. She handled the ball well under pressure and did not allow herself to get sped up. She made some shots and some good, accurate passes. She stayed in position on defense, double teaming when called for and fought through picks. Lots of potential in her game.
Juliet Ventura
Juliet Ventura
Juliet is a tough, pass first point guard. She kept the team organized all day and kept her composure while under heavy pressure. She made some good passes and knocked down some three pointers when necessary. Defensively she showed good hands and was not afraid to hit the floor to get after loose balls.
Alana has a blend of length, quickness and speed and knows how to use all of it. She’s a very smart player with excellent ball handling and passing skills. She was menace on defense, powering the full court press, and causing havoc in half court situations. She is a player to watch in PG County.
Eden Berry
Eden Berry
Another freshman I’ll be paying close attention to. Eden is a smooth, left wing with some ball handling skills and a nice touch on her shot. She was mostly in the paint and mid-range, so I didn’t see her perimeter shot, but her form looks good. Defensively she brings a lot of tools and versatility that will be helpful this season.
Dylan played her usual stellar defense and scored some buckets as well. With the team’s starting point guard going down with a season ending knee injury, she’ll be tasked with taking on some more ball handling duties. It looks like she is up to the job if today was any indication. She made good decisions with the ball and helped to keep the team organized in half court sets.
