There were a lot of subplots to this one like, top two WCAC teams, Nike vs Under Armour and my favorite, the top two players in the class going head to head. My preseason prediction of St. John’s College winning the championship over Elizabeth Seton and Bishop McNamara as the #3 in the conference most certainly served as locker room motivation as the Mustangs came out locked in and focused. The Cadets recently got touched up a bit by Carrol and that probably didn’t help their confidence any coming into this game. As for the game, the Mustangs got out to a 9-2 and the game was stuck there for about five minutes before the quarter ended with them up 9-7. Kyndal Walker Kyndal Walker 5'9" | PG St. John's College | 2024 State MD sat out most of the second quarter with foul trouble as McNamara finished the half with a 28-21 lead.
The third quarter things quickly changed from a manageable game to a blowout as the Mustangs lead expanded to 35-21. Madisen McDaniel Madisen McDaniel 5'9" | PG Bishop McNamara | 2024 State MD dropped a three pointer to make it 41-27 and going into the final period Bmac nursed a 50-41 lead. The fourth quarter belonged to the Mustangs as the cruised to a 17 point victory, winning 67-50.
Top Players:
Madisen did against the Cadets what she does against pretty much everyone, she controlled the game without being controlling. She has a knack of knowing when to pick her spots to score and when to get her teammates involved. She had a game high 16 points and shot 66% from beyond the arc. She never seemed like she was forcing the action even with this game having a possible impact on the rankings.
Mary matched Madisen with 16 points of her own and had spurts where she looked like the best player on the floor. On defense she terrorized SJC with 9 steals. She shot 70% from the field which is impressive as some of her shots had a high degree of difficulty like her off hand floater as she sliced the lane.
Zhen has been a shot blocking phenom this season when we watched her. She didn’t have any blocks this game but her ability to alter shots proved to be just as good blocks. She scored 9 points and was perfect from the free throw line. She is finishing well around the basket but I really like the way she stretches the floor with her mid range touch.
Highlights
La’Nae led the game with 8 boards half of which were on the offensive end, she also added 8 points. She is getting lot of opportunities and I can see a whole lot off double-doubles in her future. She can be the difference maker in the playoff as she is physical enough to go up against some of the bullies in the paint that the WCAC has.
It’s good to see Princess back. She was my top player entering high school. She missed some time last season but is healthy and is starting to get her swagg back. She knocked down a couple of three pointers and got some deflections on defense. At the MLK Classic she showed that she can fill up the stat sheet. She seems just as happy with a victory as she is with scoring double digits.
