Stone Bridge and Briar Woods have played four entertaining and competitive games this year, and their regional final game might have been the best. I Hope Drake Hope Drake 5’11” | SF Briar Woods | 2024 State VA was the most excellent player in this game. Briar took an early lead, but Stone Bridge made a lot of big shots and went on a lot of mini-runs. Hope Drake Hope Drake 5’11” | SF Briar Woods | 2024 State VA answered Stone Bridge’s punches and had another clutch performance. Giuliana Bohmer Giuliana Bohmer 5’7″ | SG Briar Woods | 2024 State VA did not have a huge game numbers-wise. But what impressed me was that she was forced into being the lead guard because of an injury to Tia Chen Tia Chen 5’2″ | PG Briar Woods | 2024 State VA , one of the better PGs in NOVA. Giuliana makes her mark on games as a great spot-up shooter. She still knocked down 2 of those, but how well she did with the added responsibility of being the primary ball handler was impressive.
I’ve sometimes felt Sravya Janapati Sravya Janapati 5’8″ | SG Stone Bridge HS | 2026 State VA needs to look for her offense more. That was not the case against Briar Woods. Sravya attacked the rim well and had some excellent takes. She then got going with her shot from range in the second half, knocking down a few threes. With how good of a shooter Sravya is, she will have opportunities to get to the rim. She didn’t settle for the entire game and played very well.
Georgia Simonsen Georgia Simonsen 6’0″ | SF Robinson Seconday School | 2025 State VA took over the second half of the regional final against Woodson. Georgia’s movement off the ball was excellent, and she found herself open near the rim all game. Woodson had problems stopping her from the post, and she did what she wanted in the paint. Georgia was also phenomenal on the defensive end, and she finished with 27 points in another dominant performance.
I’ve watched a lot of Madison McKenzie Madison McKenzie 5’7″ | CG Gainesville | 2024 State VA games over the past few years, and she almost always impacts games positively. Her performance against Osbourn Park may have been one of her best. Gainesville lost this game by 2, but they had a lead for a large chunk of this game due to Madison. She was terrific in transition, forced turnovers, and had an overall dominant offensive game. She knocked down a handful of threes and was close to leading Gainesville to one of the year’s biggest wins.
What helped put Osbourn Park over the edge in this game was their defense in the 4th quarter. They forced a lot of turnovers and got easy buckets from them. Keyarah Rainey Keyarah Rainey 5’9″ | SF Osboure Park | 2026 State VA was the beneficiary of a lot of Gainesville turnovers. Keyarah is such an elite athlete she is hard to stop in transition. Keyarah has dominated Gainesville this year and had a great game in a big spot.
Payton Walters Payton Walters 5’8″ | PG Osborne Park | 2027 State VA got started early, knocking down a few threes. She was also active on defense and made a couple of really nice passes. Payton was Osbourn Park’s best offensive player on the day, and like she has all year, she played way beyond her years.
