This winter whenever we spoke about the Bishop Heelan Crusaders and their dominance, we usually mentioned their star PG or new prospects out of the 2027 Class that were making waves but a constant for this group all season long was their presence in the middle, Abby Lee Abby Lee 6’0″ | C Bishop Heelen | 2025 State IA . Lee is athletic with great size and a good head on her shoulders. All season long, she dominated her matchups inside the lane, helping her teammates in anyway possible. She demonstrated that on any given night, she could produce a double-double in points and rebounding, while also being a stout defender on the ball. Like I said, this roster was one that had multiple college basketball players on it and Lee still did a great job of making her presence known each evening. That says something. That says that no matter the circumstances, Lee is good enough to make a constant impact. In todays game, that means everything. I’m hoping next Winter for her Senior year, she can come out once again, firing on all cylinders for her Crusaders Squad. Something that is more than possible from what I’ve seen so far.

The Newell-Fonda Mustangs have been a powerhouse for the past few years on the hardwood and that was no different this season. They may have fallen just short of a State Title but that was not due to a lack of effort by any means. One of the best and most important players to their system is Forward, Kinzee Hinders Kinzee Hinders 6’1″ | PF Newell-Fonda | 2025 State IA . Hinders has great size, a high motor, and an act for making something happen when her teams offense breaks down. For all intents and purposes, this group can kill you in a number of ways but the most efficient way over the past few seasons has been by the play of Hinders in the Post. When she catches with her back to the basket and she has some time, she is very tough to stop in a 1v1 situation. If the defense decides to double her, she is good enough to make the easy pass out to the perimeter for a wide-open shot from one of their guards. This program is going to continue to kill it over these next few years. If you look at their personal returning and understand the 2028 Class coming in, you can see as to why. They are going to be primed to stay relevant in the 1A Class for the foreseeable future. We just need to find out how far they can take things on a consistent basis moving forward.

The EBF Rockets have some really dominant players at the Forward/Post position and those players have had their abilies on full display for a couple of seasons now. One of the most impressive being Molly Shafer Molly Shafer 6’0″ | PF Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont | 2025 State IA . Shafer, a 6’0 Forward, has great size and movement to pair along with that size. There is never a moment I see her on the floor where I think she is outmatched or not doing what she is capable of. Other then having great size, she understands her size and that may be even more important. It’s one things to be physically dominant, it’s another to know how/when to use that dominance and Shafer understands that. This Rockets team is coming off of a season to remember. They put together another big state run and really handled their business in most of their contests on the season. Looking forward, I’m excited to see what Shafer and company can bring back to the floor next season. They will have a lot of the same pieces returning so as long as they come correct, they are going to be making some more waves before you know it.
After the season she just had and what she displayed on the hardwood for LeMars High School, Jaelyn Marienau Jaelyn Marienau 5’5″ | SG LeMars | 2028 IA maybe one of my new favorite players out of this 2025 Class. Marienau is the definition of a seasoned Shooting Guard. In almost every situation that I’ve seen unfold, she makes the right choices when it matters the most. If you see her coming down the floor in transition, she does a great job of cutting to the hoop, looking for a pass. If she doesn’t receive it, she is very good at finding an open spot around the three point line to gravitate too. She has picture perfect shot form from anywhere behind the three point line, with the ability to put the ball on the floor and get all the way to the basket or to a better spot in general for an open look. The other thing that I love about Marienau’s game is her confidence. She plays with a swagger that is second-to-none. She is the first player to let you know when she makes a big shot, while always keeping her emotions in check. Every team needs a prospect like that. Someone who isn’t afraid to yell or talk smack to an opponent. Someone who will always let their confidence shine through more than anything else. As it pertains to players that have skill, swag, and confidence, Marienau is in that conversation.
The Westwood Rebels have had a series of dominating seasons these past couple of years and one of the big reasons for that is because of the play of their big-time prospect in the middle Ashlyn Davis Ashlyn Davis 6’0″ | SF Westwood | 2025 State IA . Davis is a next level athlete. She has size, strength, and the knowledge of when to use those two things in tandem together. The Rebels run some great offense and some beautiful sets but those are all ran through Davis, underneath the basket. Everyone does a great job of setting up Davis and getting her the ball in opportune situations but if not, she is good enough to make something out of nothing herself. Her natural size is usually too much for opponents to deal with on a consistent basis and that’s something they always use to their advantage. This group is going to have one more year of returning a lot of their previous lineup. If they do the correct things and take care of business each night, I’m sure we are going to be speaking about this group at the State Tournament once again in 2025. We are a few months away from that but as long as everyone locks in for one common goal, it’s more than possible.
