In this article we highlight five individuals that have put up impactful numbers this Winter for their high school team’s.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Sometimes when a player gets to the high school level, they need to get a few games underneath their belt before they feel confident in their abilities. That was the case for Hannah Hilker Hannah Hilker SG O’Neil | 2027 NE of O’Neil High School these past few months. Hilker started off the year and saw the floor at both the Varsity and JV levels. As the season went on and Post-season quickly approached, she started to really stick to the Varsity floor more than anything else and that was because of her shooting ability from deep. Hilker can do a handful of positive things for her team but she loves to let it go from behind the three point line either in transition or against an opposing team’s zone in the half-court. On a number of occasions this Winter, she displayed that she can move all around the arc, knocking down shots at a high rate. She ended the season averaging over 12 PPG on 37% shooting from the field. Like anyone else in this position, she is going to have to continue to expand her game if she wants to keep producing. Something that is tough to accomplish but definitely do-able at this point.
I would consider Ansley Elofson Ansley Elofson 6’0″ | PF Fort Calhoun | 2027 NE as a “glue” type player for whatever team she is lacing up with. She is going to have her big games in the Scoring department but a majority of the time she is going to Score, Rebound, Assist, and Steal the ball at an even rate throughout the contest. Whenever you consider a promising Freshman, you notice players that can score the ball at a high rate at the Varsity level but that doesn’t always translate. The prospects that have play-styles that work at the next level do more then just score and Elofson embodies that. Fort Calhoun has some producing underclassmen that are going to keep them relevant for the next few years. If they all continue to get better and stay in love with this sport, they could take things a long way. Both as a group and individually.
Reagan Meyers Reagan Meyers C Superior | 2027 NE didn’t average a double-double this winter but she was close with 11 PPG and 9 RPG. Meyers is a raw talent, that has size and balance. She stands at 6’1 and moves really well for that height. She is active on the boards on both sides of the floor, while being relentless in her pursuit for the basketball. I’m not sure if Meyers main sport is Basketball or Volleyball but I think she could play at the collegiate level either way. If you consider her size and athleticism alone, she has a base to be productive in either, so I’m sure the conversation at the end of the day is going to be able her just figuring out which sport should would rather play. As it pertains to Basketball, she was a top producer out of this 2027 Class this winter and I don’t expect that to change going into next season in any way, shape, or form.
The Elkhorn South Storm laid a foundation this season that they can build on moving forward. They demonstrated that they can beat good teams while putting up impressive numbers in a handful of different statistical categories. One of their Freshman that I thought put together a nice few months was Guard, Rowan Swartz Rowan Swartz 5’7″ | SG Elkhorn South | 2027 NE . Swartz averaged just over 6 PPG and did anything asked of her by her coaches. She displayed heart, confidence, and a Will to win. Like I said, this program is on the up and up. If they continue to build on what they started this Winter, I wouldn’t be shocked if they make a State Tournament appearance in the near future. They have the pieces.
Highlights
I’ve mention the Lincoln North Star Gators more then a few times this past week because of their play at the State Tournament but a prospect that I haven’t really spoken about is Freshman Guard, Joyce Johnson Joyce Johnson 5’5″ | PG Lincoln North Star | 2027 NE . Johnson plays with an edge. She never tries to settle and whenever she gets going down hill, she is a handful for a defender to stop. During her team’s State run, she did a little bit of everything. Sometimes she brought up the ball and ran their offense, sometimes she came down the floor and attacked off the wing as the 2-guard. She was really interchangeable and that helped her have success not only in this tournament but throughout this entire season as a whole. This group is going to be right back in the same position next Winter. If they play their cards correctly and everyone continues to work in the off-season, they are sure to have a better shot at it the next time. They just need to stay locked in.
