Continue ReadingI have been in gyms catching the excitement of sub-state playoffs and have been taking copious notes. Here is a quick look at several sophomores who have stood out.
Anna Humphrey, 5’4″, PG/SG, Hays – Humphrey played a terrific game against Carroll. Constantly battling quick, fast guards who loved no more than to trap she showed poise and disciple to control the ball. A three point threat as well Humphrey is a solid rebounder, plays well at speed, and hits the assists and steals stat column as well. Humphrey made strong, catchable passes in a variety of situation, defended well on the perimeter and against interior cuts.
Brea Martin, 5’6″, CG, Bishop Carroll – Like everybody else on the roster the slightish Martin can run. She has good lateral quickness and has quick hands to generate turnovers with. Against Hays she had nearly a half dozen turnovers. Credit the Indians for their preparation and quick hands but it is an area Martin will need to improve upon.
Avery McCorry Avery McCorry 5'9" | SG Bishop Carroll | 2026 State KS , 5’10”, SF/PF, Bishop Carroll – Despite a pile of turnovers McCorry came up big for against Hays when they needed a hoop. Fast and physical McCorry is Carroll’s best pure scorer. She boxes extremely well on rebounds, finishes at speed and with athleticism, and knows how to flat seal a defender inside. And if a defender is smaller, forget about it. In the half court game I would like to see her get more touches. One thing Hays picked up on, and McCorry is one of those guilty of it, is hanging the ball out on basket drives. While more passes to her need to hit her in the numbers or higher she does have a tendency to hold the ball low. Against quick swarming defenders, like Hays had, that ball is a goner. Tough player who is just getting started climbing toward her ceiling.
Maggie Neal, 5’8″, CG, Classical School of Wichita – Neal showed herself to be the best athlete on the team. Competitive on rebounds, uncorked a three without a step from the high elbow area. She has solid speed. A player to watch develop over the upcoming summer.
Emily O’Brien Emily O’Brien 5'9" | PF Remington | 2026 State KS , 6’0″, PF/SF, Remington – O’Brien does a lot of things well. She scores well around the rim, generates assists with her passing, blocks and alters shots, and especially rebounds. In a win over Classical School of Wichita in a sub-state semi-final she had nearly 15 rebounds, evenly split between offensive and defensive. O’Brien has very long arms and transitions well. With two years remaining, as she fills out her frame and gets stronger O’Brien could turn into one of the top players in the classification. A very, very good player.
Jaicey Stuhlsatz, 5’5″, PG, Garden Plain – Stuhlsatz is a ball handler to watch. She has quicks to get to the hoop off the bounce and get down the floor with the ball in a hurry. She needs to do so with better body control though as her turnovers were caused by rushing plays.
Reece Stuhlsatz, 5’8″, PF, Garden Plain – Stuhlsatz is among the young Owl players who show a great deal of promise. She showed scoring ability around the basket, transition speed, and rebounding ability. She needs to improve her physicality and defensive positioning inside as The Independent School effectively isolated on the Owl post players to get scores. As her skill set improves I expect her to cut down on turnovers as well. The Panthers ran away with the game in big part because of forcing so many turnovers.
Zoe Winter Zoe Winter 5'10" | PF Hays | 2026 State KS , 5’11”, PF, Hays – Winter was a problem for Carroll all night long because from a sheer size standpoint because they physically did not have someone to match up with her. After scoring a early bucket off a good ball-fake, face-up move from the free throw line she was clearly a concern all night. A good rebounder she used her build, length, and solid hops to help the Indians win the rebounding battle from all night. She controlled the ball and changed ends well too. She has the potential to ring up 10 points and 10 boards a night, look for it next season.
