This past weekend marked the second “live” period of the Spring for women’s basketball prospects, as teams traveled all across the country to be evaluated by college coaches of all levels. I spent my weekend in Louisville, Kentucky, at The Classic, an annual event put on by Ohio Basketball. As someone who primarily scouts Indiana prospects, I wanted to speak on some observations I had of some non-Hoosiers I saw this past weekend.
.
Sophia has been great for this IGB team, offering them a more traditional interior presence to go with their long and athletic wings/forwards. At the same time, at her size, she moves well all over the floor, and she extends to the mid-post nicely to clear space for drivers. She can score it herself inside or facing the basket, and she is an active pursuing rebounder. She also uses her height and length to affect a lot of shots defensively.

I really enjoyed watching Jacqui when I saw her this past weekend. She has an athletic frame, she has nice length, and she has a nice skill balance. Jacqui did a tremendous job of taking care of the ball and handling the intense ball pressure and traps she saw, especially throughout a tense second half. She kept her poise throughout, while still creating offense for herself and teammates, and she was an effective defender herself.

Amauria appeared to be a talented athlete on the wing. She has really nice length, a wiry-strong frame, and she liked to catch, rip, and attack the basket from the perimeter each time. She was equally effective at the defensive end of the floor, plus she likes to pursue rebounds outside of her area. As she continues to learn how to change speeds more often and she shoots it more consistently, she could be a real problem offensively.
Carmella is a very interesting frontline prospect who does a little bit of everything. To top it off, she plays with a really nice motor, makes hustle plays, and pursues rebounds outside of her area. She has a solid to strong frame, she’s a balanced all-around athlete, and she possesses some length. I like how she was willing to be physical on the interior, but she also had nice skill in the mid-post, and she was even comfortable around the perimeter.

Taylor is one of those forwards who might be slightly undersized for how she plays, but she seems to play with a sense of urgency each possession, and she absolutely gets after it. She has a strong frame, she likes to seek out physicality, but she is also a nice all-around athlete who can beat opponents to spots, whether that’s boxing out, protecting the paint, or driving the ball to the rim herself. Stretching her game from the mid-post to the perimeter will help her long-term.

I’ve really enjoyed watching Adalyn the last couple of years, because she always plays with an athletic energy, and she flies around the floor making plays. At the same time, she looks so much stronger and more confident in herself, she’s absorbing contact better and getting to the rim more consistently, plus she is shooting it with greater consistency. I also think she’s a solid on-ball defender who can affect the game at that end of the floor.

Korinne Jones
Not knowing much about Korinne, she looks like a developing young post who is just starting to “turn that corner” into becoming a real impact player. She has an athletically strong frame, nice length, and she moves around the floor fairly easily. She could probably make even more plays at this time than I think she realizes, but she does a nice job of playing her role, hitting the boards, defending the interior, and scoring it off of teammates’ penetration.
I actually caught Kinsley in action while I was waiting for the next game on her court, but I’m glad I did. This kid is a legitimate high-major Division-I talent with a ton of upside. She is incredibly long, fluidly athletic, and even somewhat bouncy. She has a beautiful shooting stroke from the perimeter, plus she made an old school, “Jordan-esque” turn-around jumper on the baseline over a defender. Just the natural process of gaining strength and tightening her skillset will keep her at/near the top of her graduating class.
