The Run 4 Roses Classic tournament has been a staple of the first July "live" period for years, but with the changes in the NCAA calendar over the past couple of seasons, it has split into two separate tournaments...the Classic and the Championship. The Classic wrapped up Saturday and the Championship began Sunday, with some new teams arriving from other locations. Below is a look at a half dozen prospects who stood out when I was able to see them on Day-1.

I have always enjoyed Ella's steady pace on the ball, and her overall feel and patience for the game, so I was interested earlier this Spring to see how she'd adapt to the Gym Rats' up-tempo style. What it has done has forced her to play with more urgency and analyze situations quicker. She now looks more than comfortable at this level and has provided them with a good perimeter shooter and secondary ball-handler who plays hard and won't make many mistakes.

Jaylah's progression over the years has been interesting to watch. When she was younger, she would use the dribble quite a bit, but she also challenged smaller defenders inside with her size and length. Then, over the past 15-18 months, she really found consistency in her shooting stroke outside, and she hurt opponents that way. Now she has figured out how to utilize all of her tools at each level and she can pick & choose how she wants to dissect opponents as a tall, athletic, versatile wing.

Layla just continues to develop her game and flash potential for college programs needing a post. She has outstanding length, a fairly strong frame, but she can also get up and down the floor, she can use her size and/or her athleticism in the post and on the boards, plus she's a solid rotational defender who can block/alter shots. She still needs a little work on her finishing, but with the amount of growth she's shown in the last 18-24 months, it's hard not to like her as a prospect who should only get better.

Sammy really stood out to me at the IBCA team showcase in mid-June, and she has continued to look solid playing at the 17U level this entire weekend. She has an athletic, wiry frame, she runs the floor well and has some bounce, plus she has shown good all-around skill, but specifically in the mid-post. I think she can develop into an elite small college forward who can play in the mid-post or around the perimeter comfortably, especially if she can consistently extend her range a little.

There are two things that have stood out to me about Violet throughout the weekend, and they are her quick-footedness and her quick release on her jump-shot. If she can continue to improve those moving forward, then she can be a consistently effective player at the next level. She has really nice length, so the combination of that and her ability to move her feet help her defend both wings and forwards. As for her release, if she's given any space, she's knocking it down, and as deep as 3-point range.

Maya is one of the longest guards in the state, and combined with her quickness and bounce, it helps her deflect/steal passes and block shots at a high level for a guard. She can recover and make up a lot of ground defensively, as well. Offensively, she shot it fairly well from the perimeter when I saw her yesterday, and from different spots on the floor. She still will need to build some core strength, especially when she wants to get through the lane better, but she has a lot of other traits to really like.
