July having segued into August means that the AAU schedule is all but entirely in the rear-view mirror. It also means that while the beginning of the basketball season may still be some months away, the academic calendars have either commenced or are close to commencing.

In many ways, the events that take place from August to October can be considered as tune-up events for the upcoming season. One of the first of those was Carolina Girls Hoops Report's Da Future Showcase at the Talbert Recreation Center in Mooresville.

We at Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to the Charlotte suburb to observe the litany of talent that was on hand. Here is a look at the seniors and juniors that caught our attention.

A product of the always impressive ABC Lightning travel program, she is on the Prep Girls Hoops North Carolina watchlist for a reason. Furst is listed at 5-foot-10 and can utilize every bit of that height to her advantage. She fuses together height with defensive ability along with length which makes her very difficult to score against. Her own scoring ability can be described as versatile as she can connect on high-percentage tries near the rim as well as those out in the perimeter. Furst plays both volleyball and basketball and was part of a 4A Middle Creek 2023-24 rendition that finished with a record of 22-6.

The program at Legion Collegiate has always been adept at attracting top talent from other schools. Our next two evaluations are indications of that. Long will sport the green and blue colors of the Lancers following a stint where she wore 4A Olympic's colors. Long recently picked up an offer from Guilford Tech to add to her list of offers she received from Allen, Agnes Scott and USC-Aiken. Long played in 23 games in her final season with the Trojans and averaged 16.4 points and 3.6 rebounds a game. She displays strong ball-handling abilities and compliments those with superb rim attacking capabilities as well as emphatically finishing at the cup.

Speaking of noteworthy additions to Legion Collegiate's 2024-25 rendition, the Lancers landed arguably the biggest one of the offseason. Alexander is coming off a 2023-24 season where she was part of a 2A Andrew Jackson assembling that claimed a state championship. Now, moving into her junior season, she is fusing together experience with talent. Given that she is 6-foot-1, if she has the ball near the basket, Alexander is a virtual lock to convert that into two points – plus an old-fashioned 3-point try if she draws contact. Her rebounding also comes into play to prevent opponents from getting second-chance point opportunities. Florida Memorial and St. Clair Community College have extended offers her way.

Holland's superb play has had her swimming in collegiate offers – many of them from the Division I realm. UNC-Wilmington, Elon, Boston College, Rice, South Alabama, Delaware and, most recently, Wake Forest all have Holland on their respective radars. Holland is coming off a travel season where she ran with Team GBMS. She impressed as a ball handler as well as in the midrange game. Rebounding, passing and defense are also strong suits to her game which is why so many Division I colleges want to see Holland wear their uniform in two years. Holland averaged 27.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 6.5 steals, 5.7 assists and 1.5 blocks per contest in 30 games for a 3A Stuart Cramer team that finished 24-6 last season.

While the bulk of participants at Da Future hailed from the Carolinas, Gray also ensured that the Commonwealth of Virginia was represented in Mooresville as well. She is a multi-sport athlete whose career has also included soccer alongside basketball. Gray is listed at 5-foot-5 but displays adeptness at taking care of the rock. In addition, she fuses together rim attacking ability with plenty of speed and quickness. Gray will enter her junior season with Carlisle in 2024-25. She has already won a pair of VISAA state championships as a Chief – including last season where Carlisle concluded 2023-24 with a mark of 25-11.
