High school tryouts have arrived and the season is just around the corner. Growing up, I remember the excitement of reading preview magazines for my favorite sports teams and learning about key players before the season started. The enthusiasm and excitement I have for the Michigan Varsity Girls Basketball season has been building since the end of AAU, which leads to my endeavor to write these conference preview articles. Every coach and team in the state has the desire to perform better than they did the previous season in their conference and in the playoffs. Each year there are coaching changes, graduations, transfers, and varsity additions that shift the dynamics of teams in the conference. The Macomb Area Conference consists of a whopping 36 teams divided into six divisions with six teams per division. The Red Division includes Macomb Dakota, Eisenhower, Utica Ford II, Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North, and Port Huron. The White Division includes Anchor Bay, Cousino, Lakeview, Lanse Creuse North, Romeo, and Utica. The Blue Division includes Clinton Chippewa Valley, Fraser, Marysville, Port Huron Northern, South Lake, and Sterling Heights Stevenson. The Gold Division includes Warren Fitzgerald, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore, L'Anse Creuse, Marine City, Roseville, and St. Clair. The Silver Division includes Center Line, Clawson, Lamphere, Sterling Heights, Warren Mott, and Warren Woods Tower. The Bronze Division includes Clintondale, Eastpointe, Hazel Park, Lincoln, Madison, and New Haven. Each Division selects a total of ten All-Conference players and a conference MVP.

Janiyah is an athletic guard for Center Line who immediately became an impact player as a freshman, earning All-Conference Honors last season. She chases the ball on defense, closes out quickly, and elevates to block shots. Janiyah puts her foot down to accelerate for layups off the dribble and comfortably knocks down 3s from the perimeter with a smooth follow-through. Janiyah will be an exciting prospect to watch during her sophomore season.

Maddie recently committed to Chicago State for soccer and she will be relied upon heavily to lead Clawson's backcourt this winter. She pushes the ball quickly in transition and scores layups through contact at the rim. Maddie splits defenders with crossover dribbles and drives hard downhill. Her senior leadership will be important as the Trojans look to be more competitive in 2024.

Emilie earned All-Conference Honors as a junior and after seeing her compete at several events during the off-season, I expect her senior year to be even better. Emilie is a point guard prospect who has the qualities that a coach looks for at the next level. She is physically and mentally tough, receptive towards coaching, hard-working, and an excellent teammate. Emilie sets up teammates by dishing accurate passes and has an accurate jumper off the dribble. She creates separation using a variety of dribble combinations and creates steals on the defensive end. Emilie will be an excellent addition to whichever college program she joins following graduation and I look forward to seeing her compete for Lamphere this winter.

Addison is a versatile forward who produced in several statistical categories for Warren Mott last season, earning All-Conference Honors as a junior. She anticipates passes on defense to create deflections and steals. Addison pushes the ball hard in transition and drives into contact to earn free throws. She isn't afraid to let it fly from the perimeter, hitting timely 3s for the Marauders. Addison uses pivots and drop steps to finish off two in the paint. She battles for rebounds and is a double-double threat every night. Addison will be an important player again this season and will be a forward I'm eager to see more of in 2024.

Tazaria is an athletic guard who earned All-Conference Honors as a sophomore and will look to build on that success as a junior for Warren Woods Tower. Tazaria secures defensive rebounds and fires long passes to teammates in transition for assists. She disrupts passing lanes with her active hands and converts layups with either hand. Tazaria accelerates off the dribble to beat defenders and scores through contact at the rim. She uses her length to block shots inside and will be a prospect to watch this winter.
