There were several intriguing matchups on the opening night of the 2024 Michigan girls' high school basketball season. I couldn't visit these two gyms in person, but I was eager to stream the games online. A crosstown collision took place with Homer (D3) hosting Quincy (D3) and Cadillac (D1) traveling to Big Rapids (D2). Quincy spoiled the home opener by defeating Homer 38-33 and Big Rapids defended their home court against Cadillac, winning a 31-27 nail-biter. After reviewing the games, here are a few of the impact players who stood out from the teams.

Deziray had a fantastic junior season for the Orioles and her complete performance on Monday guided Quincy to their first win. Dez started strong, driving hard off a high-ball screen after stunning her defender with a double-crossover, and elevated to score a contested floater in the paint off two feet. She powered through a defender to convert an and-one layup in transition and blocked several shots in the paint. Deziray poured in 15 points, leading the way with 9 in the second half. She outworked her opponents for offensive rebounds and will be an exciting prospect to watch this winter.

Kendyl gave Quincy a comfortable cushion with her knockdown perimeter shooting on Monday. Kendyl found soft spots in the zone and ripped the nets with four three-pointers in the first half. She added multiple free throws to lead all scorers with 15 points at the break. Kendyl anticipated passes to grab steals on defense, created separation with her dribble, and secured rebounds. Her pinpoint accuracy and college range will be an advantage for the Orioles this winter.

Alivia led the charge with her toughness and effort on Monday to help lead the Trojans back in the second half. She pressured perimeter players to secure a steal and hustled to chase down a loose ball going out of bounds. Alivia sparked the team on offense, pivoting and driving hard with her left to earn free throws. Alivia boosted Homer's energy by scoring a strong and-one layup in transition, then converted her free throw. She stole a pass in the press and scored an impressive drop-step layup off the glass after pinning her defender using a strong seal. Alivia is an aggressive and physical forward who will be a major contributor for the Trojans this winter.

Brooklen is a freshman guard in the starting lineup who showed she's ready to contribute right away for Homer on Monday. Brooklen denied cutters on defense and made a great read on offense to score a floater after using a backdoor cut. Brooklen showed her shooting range by drilling a a smooth corner 3 and added a long two-point jumper. She is a promising young player to watch with the Trojans this winter.

Nuray's varsity debut was heavily anticipated after her MVP performance at the Headliners last winter and continual success at elite camps during the summer. She played her first game for Big Rapids on Monday and scored a game-high 13 points, helping her team earn an opening night victory. Nuray caused turnovers on defense at the top of the diamond with her pressure and scored several transition layups on run-outs. Nuray caused a foul by leaping up to secure consecutive offensive rebounds and split defenders with her dribble to score a speedy layup. Her highlight reel play happened when she froze her defender with a hesitation dribble, accelerated by, and then used a high pick-up move to elevate way up to score a contested layup. Nuray excited the crowd with her athleticism and she is off to a great start for the Cardinals.

Hadley stood out on Monday and her hard-nosed style ultimately helped Big Rapids secure an opening-night win. Hadley scored a swift layup in transition and pressed ball-handlers on the perimeter to create steals. She created separation from defenders using a combination of crossovers and retreat dribbles. Hadley put her foot down and drove fearlessly into the teeth of the defense to force fouls; she knocked down five from the charity stripe. One of Hadley's best moments was when she used a quick crossover with a euro-step to score a tough and-one layup, then added the free throw. Hadley battled to secure defensive rebounds, scored 11 points, and turned in a complete performance for the Cardinals.

Kaleigh made several plays on Monday for Cadillac that helped her team compete to the very end. She pressured the ball on defense to deflect a pass and stole the ball in the backcourt, which resulted in an easy layup. Kaleigh found her hot spot in the corner, hitting two triples before adding a deep wing 3 to end the game. She led the team with 11 points and will be a major contributor for the Vikings this winter.
