In case you didn't know, there is a vast area of land located on the other side of the Mackinaw Bridge known as Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A ‘yooper' is a resident of the Upper Peninsula and we want to make sure the girl's basketball prospects who play across the bridge are receiving media coverage and recognition as well. Driving to games from Southeast Michigan is a challenge, but each week I will be tuning into games online. My goal is to help college coaches and our Michigan girls' basketball community in the south learn more about the best players in the U.P. Here are some of the Yooper Hoopers who stood out in week five.

Izzie led the charge with her sharpshooting in a competitive game against Calumet. She buried four triples off the catch with 14 points on the night and grabbed 9 rebounds. Izzie sealed off defenders with a strong stance to catch entry passes, worked hard to keep her girl contained on defense despite multiple crossover moves, and handled the ball with confidence against full court pressure.

Mayce dribbled into a confident pull-up 3 off the opening tip and kept shooting lights out all night. She went scorched Earth against Escanaba from long range, draining six triples and scoring 20 points on the night. She dished assists to teammates and turned a steal into two points for the Braves. Mayce threw accurate skip passes against the zone and handled the ball well for Gladstone.

Eva made a great impact for the Braves against Escanaba with her defensive effort. She pressured ball-handlers on the perimeter to force steals and fronted cutters to intercept passes off the ball. Eva finds space on offense and initiates contact when boxing out to gain the advantage for rebounds. Eva is a threat to hit perimeter shots and she knocked down three triples against Kingsford and Iron Mountain in December.

Lexi was a guard who stood out in a competitive game against Calumet last week. She threw a one-handed rocket pass in transition to an open teammate and hit nothing by nylon on two pure 3-pointers. Lexi shuffled quickly to stop drives to the basket and kept her hands very active on defense to create steals. Lexi had 14 points and 9 steals in a win against Manistique earlier this season. Her ability to hit shots and create turnovers is an advantage in the backcourt.

Jackie has been a complete player for Calumet this season and a double-double threat seemingly every game. Jackie competes for rebounds and drives with determination to the basket. She creates steals in the press, scores through contact, and converts layups in traffic. Jackie created separation from defenders using crossovers and spin dribbles, contributing in all areas for the Copper Heads with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
