Open Division: Canyon View/Mesquite

On February 20th I attended the Open Division 2nd round game between the Canyon View Jaguars and the Mesquite Wildcats. This was a high energy game as both teams came to play to win. The Wildcats held a 4-point lead at the half, but Canyon View didn't make it easy for them. In the 3rd quarter the Wildcats began to pull away and secured a 64-48 victory to move on to quarterfinals of the Open Division Playoffs.   Here I look at some of the standouts from this game    Guidry showed she is one of the best wing scorers in the state.  She got pretty much any shot that she wanted to and did it within the flow of the offense. Her body control is what makes her difficult to guard. She played like she is on a mission to get her squad to the championship.     Flowers tried to put her squad on her back, and she almost did just that. She was unstoppable going to the basket the entire game. She finished with close to 30 points, many of them with defenders draped all over her.     Fisher is one of the fasting rising prospects in the class and she confirmed that with her play. She was a force in the paint as she was not to be outworked. She finished with 15 rebounds, with a whopping 11 of them coming on the offensive glass. She was also a big force on the defensive end in the paint.     Lewis came out the gate and was throwing her body all over the place. Her biggest impact on the defensive end where she had multiple steals that resulted in easy baskets for herself or her teammates. She also was active as a passer.     Gonzales ran the point beautifully. She handled the pressure defense pretty much easily and evenly distributed the ball to her teammates to keep the defense guessing. She also found time get herself some buckets. Kahlia played scrappy defense, making ball handlers uncomfortable.     The strong wing came up big for her team especially in the 2nd half. When she's on her game like she was tonight there are not many that can shoot it as well as she does. She used her size to shoot over the top of smaller defenders. On defense she played solid defense collecting 2 steals along the way.
