It was guaranteed that a new 4A girls champion would be crowned given the result of one of the semifinal contests of this year's tournament.

First Baptist entered play having only taken losses to two public schools in North Augusta and Berkeley. The tournament path for the Hurricanes has seen First Baptist claim victories over Hilton Head Christian in the first round, Augusta Christian in the semifinals and a stunning win over two-time defending champion Heathwood Hall in the semifinals.

Trinity Collegiate's three losses it entered Friday's play with also came against public schools – North Augusta, Andrew Jackson and Camden. The Titans were one of two teams that effectively earned a bye to the quarterfinals (Heathwood Hall being the other with the Ashley Hall forfeit). Trinity Collegiate defeated Ben Lippen in those quarterfinals then Northwood Academy (which defeated a two-loss Northside Christian assembling) in the semifinals.

For the first time since SCISA went to a fourth classification, championship hardware was bestowed on a team whose name was not Heathwood Hall. That team would be Trinity Collegiate after its 65-40 win over First Baptist.

Records

The 2024-25 rendition of Trinity Collegiate concluded its season not only with the distinction of being named state champions, but with a record of 21-3 plus its 4-0 showing in region. First Baptist earned runner-up status along with finishing 29-3 overall and 10-0 in its region.

Remember What Happened Last Time?

Friday's get-together between these two 4A powers was actually a rematch of a playoff contest between these same two teams from last season. That one went the way of First Baptist with the result being 40-22.

Quarter-By-Quarter

While Trinity Collegiate ran an efficient offense, First Baptist struggled from the field as the Hurricanes' first field goal did not occur until over two minutes were remaining in the opening frame. Free throws were keeping First Baptist in it, but the Titans had built a 17-9 edge with one in the books.

The Hurricanes found some success with 3-pointers – but the Titans were finding success virtually everyplace else. As halftime arrived, the scoreboard would denote Trinity Collegiate scoring 31 to First Baptist's 21.

Trinity Collegiate continued to overwhelm First Baptist on both ends of the floor as the Titans' lead would balloon into the twenties. With one frame remaining to decide a new 4A champion, the Titans would lead the Hurricanes with the score being 58-30.

As the Trinity Collegiate advantage grew into the thirties, it became apparent that this was another where the victor was not in doubt – only the point margin. The Titans' championship-winning margin of victory would be 27 points.

A pair of 20-point scorers would power a ferocious Titans attack to its 21st win of the season. One of those was junior [player_tooltip player_id='369800' first='Autumn' last='Kind'] – who concluded her evening with 22. Kind would tally 12 of her 22 in the second half.

On her final occasion sporting Trinity Collegiate's signature blue and white colors, [player_tooltip player_id='258135' first='Makayla' last='Legette'] would add 20 points. Legette did the majority of her damage in the first half, placing 13 of her 20 on the scoreboard.

The Titans would also benefit from a 14-point performance courtesy of [player_tooltip player_id='355927' first='Saleese' last='Kind']. She is one of the two team captains – along with Legette. Kind found plenty of success from the free throw line on Friday night.

Teams that have rough games usually have one or two bright spots. For the Hurricanes, [player_tooltip player_id='748211' first='Madison' last='Pojani'] was that bright spot. Not only did she lead all First Baptist point getters with 15, she also connected on three of the team's six 3-pointers.
