TUALATIN, ORE. — The second annual 3x3 Hoop League tipped off its first of four Sundays of action on Sept 21 at Riverside High School, showcasing over 125 hoopers sharpening their game in the fall offseason. The grassroots league more than doubled its registration numbers from its first year.

The 3x3 Hoop League follows the FIBA 3x3 rules, as seen in the Summer Olympics. Its a great format for evaluating players because no one can hide on the court in a continuous 3-a-side matchup. It's also a great tool for player development because everyone sees the court and everyone gets a lot of touches on the ball.

Four simultaneous 15-minute half-court games run with 12-second shot clocks and no breaks after scoring or between possessions. Teams have up to one rotating substitute and one timeout. Threes are scored as two points, and twos are scored as one. Games can be ended once one side tallies 21 points, but the goal of the 3x3 Hoop League is training and development, so teams can opt to play the full 15 minutes.

On the first day of action, I split my attention between Courts 1 and 2, which featured varsity-level players. My colleague Ryan Oppenheimer highlighted the Top Performers from Court 1. Here are players who stood out on Court 2:

Five-foot-10 senior shooting guard [player_tooltip player_id='502361' first='Peyton' last='Vorderstrasse'] led things from the start for her Lebanon squad and was a three-level scorer at the 3x3 Hoop League on Day 1. Vorderstrasse is strong with the ball and consistently got downhill to finish at the rim or draw the foul. She knocked down the midrange jumper off the bounce and on the turnaround. She knocked down the pull-up and catch-and-shoot threes. She closed out, blocked, rebounded, and won 50/50s. She had a motor and played with a next-level physicality. Vorderstrasse's Lebanon squad went 2-1 on the day, defeating a Washougal and Stayton squad 21-16 and 16-6, respectively, and losing to a Clackamas squad 19-17. Vorderstrasse announced offers from Lewis & Clark and Pacific University in September.

West Linn 5-foot-11 senior guard/forward [player_tooltip player_id='1002464' first='Ayla' last='Arnold'] was a strong driver, defender, and galvanizer at the 3x3 Hoop League on Day 1. Arnold is a competitor and had positive energy and vocal leadership on the court and on the bench. She had a strong presence on defense, on and off the ball. She's a hustle player who closed out, contested, blocked, boxed out, rebounded, hunted passes, and won the loose ball. She had nice, strong takes and multiple athletic finishes at the rim. She hit from three. The kid consistently works hard. Ayla's West Linn squad went 2-0 on the day, defeating a fellow West Linn squad 20-12 and a Mountainside squad 21-15.

Mountainside 5-foot-7 senior shooting guard Geovanna Darlington put her quick-step and three-point shooting on display at the 3x3 Hoop League on Day 1. Darlington is an athlete with a small frame who showed off her ability to drain deep and contested three-pointers in matchups against West Linn and West Salem upperclassmen. She's fast and shifty on the bounce. Multiple times, she blew by her defender on the perimeter to finish swiftly at the rim. Darlington had good handles and passing. She played good on-ball defense. Darlington's Mountainside squad went 0-2 on the day, losing to a West Salem and a West Linn squad 21-10 and 21-15, respectively.

Stayton 5-foot-6 junior combo guard [player_tooltip player_id='1229061' first='Kourtney' last='Samek'] is a tough defender who made hustle plays and got downhill at the 3x3 Hoop League on Day 1. Samek's tight on-ball defense and active hands disrupted opponents. She fought over screens, tipped passes, and ripped the ball for a steal. Samek can get to the rim to finish and draw the foul. She can drive and kick out to for the assist. She knocked down some shots and created looks for her teammates, including her sister [player_tooltip player_id='839071' first='Kathryn' last='Samek'], who was an efficient shooter on Day 1. The Samek's Stayton squad went 1-2 on the day, defeating a Silverton squad 15-11, and losing to a West Linn and a Lincoln squad 12-10 and 7-6, respectively.
