The 3x3 Hoop League, one of Oregon's most prestigious early-fall girls basketball showcases, took place last Sunday. The league will span a total of four Sundays from September 21 to October 12 at Riverside High School in Tualatin.

The action is frenetic — 34 teams ranging from 5th grade to high school varsity compete in a four-hour slate with four simultaneous half-court 3-on-3 games at all times. The shot clock is 12, and the games run for 15 minutes each with official FIBA rules. The idea is to foster player development and to make sure every player receives adequate touches.

There was way too much action to cover with just one article, but I kept my eyes locked on court 1 where most of the varsity-level teams played. These hoopers stood out to me among the rest.

The Portland State commit's game looks college-ready as she approaches her senior season with West Salem. Zuniga's all-around versatility allows her to dominate a 3-on-3 environment in several ways, but her preferred method is attacking the rack with a controlled ferocity. She also regularly stepped out for 15-foot jumpers and post hooks. Her body language indicates that she is a mature leader and is used to the pressure of being a primary offensive creator. She seemed to have a lot of fun playing alongside her sister Sophia, and it translated to easy buckets — her team won both of its games on the day by 10 and 6 points.

Oregon City's team took the court for the first game of the day, and Carns didn't wait to make an impression. The 5'0" scoring machine immediately made it clear she was one of the best guards in the gym. She was involved in every possession and was looking to shoot more often than not for good reason — her flurry of consecutive jumpers led her team to a 20-11 win. A player of her size must also be savvy with the ball, and she put that on display with off-handed finishes over taller defenders, decisive and purposeful dribbling, and a one-handed bounce pass on the money to a cutter. When given the space to operate, Carns has an ability to bend defenses at will.

Foord always seemed to be open on the block for her team, and when she got the ball, she showed off her polish. She scored off her dropstep multiple times, delivered accurate interior passes, and grabbed rebound after rebound. Being the tallest player on her team, the 5'11" Foord was the de-facto big despite her primary 5-on-5 position being the 3. She looked comfortable enough in the role to slide to the 4 or the 5 with ease come the high school season.

Borchardt has elite length for her position and class that should only continue to grow. The only middle schooler playing at the varsity level, Borchardt held her own with her West Linn standout teammates Kaylor, Kyla and [player_tooltip player_id='1232847' first='Kinley' last='Buse']. Despite her dad's success as an All-Pac-12 bigman, Borchardt has been trained as a guard/wing, and when you see her put the ball on the floor, it's easy to understand why. Her hesitation-cross game is a go-to move to get a step on her defender, and she utilizes long strides to get to the rim in a hurry while doing a good job protecting the ball in traffic. She also brings a toughness rarely seen from players her age; after coming down hard on her knee midway through a game, she bounced back and continued to be all over the court on both ends in a 12-10 win.

If you've got a deep bag, 3-on-3 is a great place to show it off, and Fancher's game is appropriately audacious. The Barlow sophomore has great height and explosiveness for her position, and she used those tools to get to the free throw line a lot. It wasn't her best shooting day, but most of her misses were short or long, and she never let up the aggression. Her creative kick-out passing put pressure on defenses to rotate quickly, and she also hit a lightning-quick spin gather into a layup that would've been one of the plays of the day had it not rimmed out.
