We had our first games on the schedule last night, and the results gave us exactly what early-season basketball should: confirmation on some of the teams and players we expected to perform, and a few new names already making noise. Some outcomes aligned with preseason projections, while others introduced fresh storylines and players ready to step into bigger roles. These opening games are already shaping the narrative for who to watch, who's rising, and which teams might be ahead of schedule.

Maple Mountain vs Judge Memorial: 54-27

[player_tooltip player_id='825009' first='Leah' last='Bailey'] and [player_tooltip player_id='997502' first='Munah' last='Doe'] delivered for their teams exactly as expected, stepping into lead roles and setting the tone on opening night. [player_tooltip player_id='1377930' first='Sara' last='Palmer'] also made a major impact, dominating the glass with 13 rebounds while finishing as the second-leading scorer, showing she'll be a consistent interior presence for Maple.

What stood out most, though, was Maple's depth. They had eight different players put points on the board and more than doubled the score —proof that this isn't a one- or two-player team.

Judge showed flashes and effort, but Maple's overall depth and tempo overwhelmed them. This matchup gives an early indication of who Maple Mountain could be—disciplined, deep, and dangerous—and it gives other teams a preview of what they'll have to prepare for on both ends of the floor.

Kanab vs Desert Hills: 61 - 48

Anyone questioning Kanab's ability to stay relevant in 2A after graduating a large senior class got their answer quickly — this team has reloaded around its cornerstone center, Rylee Little. Beating 4A Desert Hills, Little accounted for nearly a third of Kanab's scoring, and while her production was expected, what stood out most was the supporting cast that emerged around her.

New contributors stepped into meaningful roles, showing poise, energy, and willingness to complement Little's presence in the paint. Their ability to space the floor, defend, rebound, and knock down timely shots kept defenses honest and prevented opponents from locking solely onto Little.

Ridgeline vs Payson: 50-34

Ridgeline is proving exactly why they entered the season as the preseason No. 1 in 4A. Their depth was on full display, with seven different players getting on the scoreboard—showcasing just how balanced and dangerous this roster is. [player_tooltip player_id='796477' first='Abby' last='Munford'] provided the veteran presence, matching freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1235913' first='Sam' last='Brown'] with 15 points apiece, demonstrating both leadership and the strength of Ridgeline's incoming talent.

For Payson, [player_tooltip player_id='879702' first='Emmy' last='Hales'] put up an impressive 18 points and showed her ability to score at all three levels, but without more help, it wasn't enough to keep pace with Ridgeline's depth and tempo. This game painted a clear picture of what opponents will face against Ridgeline—multiple scoring threats, disciplined ball movement, and a roster where any player on the floor can contribute.

If this opener is any indication, Ridgeline isn't just talented—they're deep, balanced, and built for a run.

Tooele vs Grantsville: 58-52

In a cross-town rivalry where both teams featured new faces in bigger roles, a few players wasted no time proving they were ready. For Tooele, it was no surprise that [player_tooltip player_id='825056' first='Kennedy' last='Searle'] took charge—dropping 17 points and showing she's ready to be the Buffalos' go-to scorer. On the other side, Grantsville showcased a lineup full of new contributors after graduating multiple seniors, and it was [player_tooltip player_id='952640' first='Emmy' last='Butler'] who emerged as the spark. She led with 16 points, including three shots from deep, and gave Grantsville a reliable perimeter threat.

With both teams adjusting to new rotations, this matchup was tight enough to show that neither program is falling off. Instead, it gave the rest of the region a clear early look at what they can expect when facing Tooele and Grantsville
