Mid-Season Freshman Report Card

This report only highlights a small snapshot of the talent in Arizona's freshman class. There are plenty of young players across the state making early impressions, and the future of Arizona high school girls' basketball remains bright. This freshman class is worth tracking not just this season, but well beyond.   Here are just a few of the standout freshmen from the first half of the season    Jacobs has stepped into the lead guard role for the Coyotes and looks comfortable doing it. She's embraced the responsibility of running a team at a young age and has consistently delivered. What stands out most is her poise — she plays with the confidence of someone well beyond her years. That confidence has translated nationally as well, as Jacobs has performed at a high level in out-of-state events, further validating the buzz surrounding her game.     Curtis arrived at Tuba City with expectations, and she's exceeded them. The Ballyhood freshman has a very advanced feel for the game, particularly for a point guard at this stage of her development. She sees the floor well, keeps teammates involved, and can score when needed. Curtis is a true offensive threat who can hurt defenses in multiple ways, whether it's getting downhill, pulling up, or making plays off the bounce.     Freeman has been a tone-setter for North High School. The power guard brings physicality, toughness, and consistent production. Averaging a double-double, Freeman has helped push North to places it hasn't reached in recent seasons. Defensively, she's disruptive and active, ranking among the state leaders in steals. Offensively, she attacks with purpose and doesn't shy away from contact. Her impact is felt on both ends of the floor.     Williams may have a quiet demeanor, but her game speaks loudly. She approaches the game with a businesslike mindset and consistently performs her role. The freshman combo guard has already drawn attention from state, regional, and national outlets with her steady play. She's efficient, composed, and rarely rushed. Williams understands how to play within a system while still asserting herself when needed — a trait college programs value early.     Salstrand has quietly built one of the more impressive freshman résumés in the state during the first half of the season. She scores in a variety of ways and shoots the ball with confidence, particularly from the perimeter. Her off-ball movement and willingness to take big shots are notable for a young player. Sahlstrand is clearly laying the foundation to be a significant piece for Notre Dame Prep in the coming years.     Zender may not always start, but her impact is undeniable. The freshman post player has been productive in limited minutes, making her presence felt with strong rebounding and physical post play. She also brings a modern wrinkle to her game, showing the ability to step out and knock down perimeter jumpers. That versatility gives Gilbert a valuable option off the bench and points to a high ceiling as she continues to develop.
