IOWA CITY, Iowa - Dubuque Wahlert Catholic traveled here on Tuesday night with upset on its mind. For a half, it looked like the vision would become a reality. The bid came up short, however, with the home team securing a 39-36 Mississippi Valley Conference victory.

Despite the setback, the Golden Eagles left the gym taking away plenty of positives. They limited a Class 5A Top 10 team to 10 first-half points and less than 40 for the game.

Defense travels. That makes Wahlert very dangerous in the 3A playoffs.

I looked forward to watching Tanny in action. I'd seen her when she played in the same youth program as our daughter and had heard her game had come a long way. Plus, I reported on her mother, Amy Herrig-Tanny, when she played at Iowa. Young Tanny certainly lived up to the advanced billing. She's a no-doubt Division I prospect with a significantly high ceiling. Tanny's game is advanced in a lot of areas from her handle to shooting form to footwork to defensive technique. She can create matchup problems with her versatile skill set on offense and can guard opponents at multiple positions. Colleges already have Tanny on their radar and more will follow.

Scherr is averaging about 11 points and six rebounds a game as a sophomore. She ranks second among Golden Eagles in both of those statistical categories. Scherr held up well against a veteran Iowa City High team in mid-January, flashing multi-level scoring ability. She stood out for toughness around the rim and an ability to finish with either hand. Scherr flashes a nice pull-up game and is explosive off of the bounce. A good athlete, the 10th-grader moves well laterally and quick hands help her defend well on the ball.

I'd gotten familiar with Lueken through my work at Prep Dig. She shined in volleyball as a bouncy pin with a heavy swing and a good feel for the sport. Lueken looked just as comfortable on the basketball court when seeing her compete against Iowa City High in mid-January. She's a three-level scorer capable of stretching the floor or exploding off of the bounce. Lueken keeps the ball moving but attacks when recognizing an opportunity. A sound rebounder on both ends, the junior might shine the most on defense, where she accepts tough assignments and locks up the opponent.

What King lacks by being on the shorter side for the sport she makes up with technical soundness, smarts and toughness. She was a main reason why the Golden Eagles almost upset Iowa City High on the road in mid-January. King was locked in on both ends of the court. She's an especially strong on-ball defender, sliding her feet, staying in front of the opponent and pressuring the bounce. King is a pass-first point guard adept at getting the team into its set and keeping the floor balanced. It's a keen handle with burst off of the dribble and sharp court vision.
