Celia Scherr wasn’t the leader for her Wahlert Catholic team last season with their star Freshman Emily Tanny taking over that role but Scherr was one of her team’s, “Big 3”, and she should be in that same position throughout her Junior season. Tanny is going to bring a lot of attention, that is going to free up Scherr to have some big moments and some even bigger games as a whole. She is a competitor, who has a fundamental grasp on the game. She can work the X’s and O’s within her team’s system to a T or she can run 5-0 and mix things up with her next-level movement in both the half court and in transition. We are going to have a chance to see Scherr up close this Fall at our PGH Showcase in October. I’m going to be looking to find out how Scherr competes against some of the best players in the state at this event. From everything we have watched so far, I’m sure she is going to kill it. She just had to play with confidence.

Scherr is averaging about 11 points and six rebounds a game as a sophomore. She ranks second among Golden Eagles in both of those statistical categories. Scherr held up well against a veteran Iowa City High team in mid-January, flashing multi-level scoring ability. She stood out for toughness around the rim and an ability to finish with either hand. Scherr flashes a nice pull-up game and is explosive off of the bounce. A good athlete, the 10th-grader moves well laterally and quick hands help her defend well on the ball.

Scherr is one of those prospects that takes what the defense gives her. If there is open space, she steps into a simple pull up jump shot. If she is overplayed on the shot, she can put it on the floor and dribble into open space for a better look. She can even score over smaller defenders near the hoop with her lengthy arms. All in all, this was a good showing for Scherr. She did her thing and played consistently well throughout.
