IOWA CITY, Iowa - Waterloo West traveled south to Iowa City earlier this year and upset Top 10 Liberty. The Wahawks were shooting for more good fortune Tuesday night in the old state capitol, where they took on Class 5A eighth-ranked City High in Little Hawk Arena.

It looked like the visitors were well on the way to their bid when jumping out to a double-digit advantage in the first half. They did again when bouncing back from a double-digit deficit to make it a one-possession game in the closing minutes. In the end, West came up just short, falling, 47-42.

West showed again that it's not a team you want in your regional bracket. Here are several student-athletes that stood out during the game at City followed by a photo gallery of Wahawks:

Prep Girls Hoops Iowa's No. 28 player overall and ninth-ranked point guard in the state's 2026 Class eclipsed the 2,000-career point mark in a late January game at Iowa City High that we attended. She led all scorers in the contest, finishing in the mid 20s during a season that's seen her average more than 26.0 PPG. Ollivierre is a three-level scorer that can get her shot from a number of angles and release points. Sharp footwork and dexterity with both hands make her a threat to score until she passes the ball. In doing that, she facilitates offense efficiently and moves well without the ball. Ollivierre is fast and stronger than her slighter frame would suggest. Those traits help her defend on the ball and rebound. The West Point pledge is set up for success at the next level.

It's pretty easy to spot Matit. The 6-foot-6 senior center towers over most of the competition. That was the case when Waterloo West played Iowa City High in late January with Prep Girls Hoops in the house. The Class of 2026 prospect is raw in basketball terms, but you can't teach height, as the saying goes. The foundation is there for a college to develop Matit's skills and reap the rewards in doing so. She has a soft left-handed shooting stroke. While not overly agile, Matit can move, get in position to block and alter shots, and does well on the backboards. A year in prep school or at the JUCO level could be the next step, but a four-year school with roster space and a hole in the middle could do a heck of a lot worse.

Thomas was hampered by foul trouble during a Prep Girls Hoops in-person scouting opportunity at Iowa City High in late January. When she was playing freely, an interesting skill set emerged. Thomas is a legit 5-10 with strength. That helps her operate effectively around the rim. Thomas has no problem going out onto the floor and handling the ball. Her quickness and agility aid her in opening up scoring opportunities. She sees the court well and finds open teammates. Thomas hits the backboards hard and can be a good defender when not bogged down with fouls.

One thing is certain when playing at Waterloo West - you will be coached up. Prep Girls Hoops saw that during an in-person scouting opportunity of Moore when the Wahawks visited Iowa City High in late January. The junior contributed in multiple areas as she had all season. Fundamentally sound with athleticism, Moore can guard multiple positions, score, assist and rebound. Potential exists for raising her numbers in all the statistical categories. She should receive a chance at doing that next winter following graduation losses after this season.
