Defense wins championships! It always has. Since the beginning the game has rewarded those willing to guard, disrupt, and protect the paint. The saying “the best offense is a good defense” is one of the game's absolute truths.. In the Hampton Roads Region (AKA the 757), that truth shows up every night . It lies with players who take pride in stopping runs, disrupting opposing offenses and making life miserable for opponents. The following players are the basketball bandits and rim protectors I have been fortunate to see play. The game-changers who set the tone, and anchor teams. While proving that toughness on the defensive end still separates contenders from pretenders, and more important victory from defeat.

I could accurately sum up Selby's defensive impact in one sentence: she averages nine steals per game.
However, that number alone does a disservice to the full scope of her influence on the defensive end. A constant menace in the passing lanes, Selby combines an explosive first step with impressive reaction speed and timing to disrupt offenses before they develop.

At 5'10", she has the athleticism and length to guard larger opponents in the post, contest shots, and redirect passes without sacrificing position. Pair that with her ability to guard the point of attack using relentless ball pressure. Selby consistently dictates tempo and forces opponents out of rhythm. Opposing guards know going in—a night against Selby is going to be a long one.

Corbin possesses the ability to shut down opposing offenses in the post. Playing far bigger than her 5'11" frame suggests, she utilizes strong positioning, sound footwork, and impressive strength to eliminate second-chance opportunities through defensive rebounding.

Her shot-blocking presence makes it difficult for opponents to even get a first look at the rim, consistently altering and deterring attempts in the paint. Corbin is athletic enough to block a shot, run the floor, and immediately ignite the Churchland offense in transition.

A traditional post defender with a high basketball IQ, Corbin consistently gets to her spots early, contests vertically, and redirects shots without fouling. Her discipline and positioning anchor the defense and set the tone in the paint.

Ware, at 6'7", is a true presence in the post. While she projects as a long-term developmental prospect, her defensive prowess is already evident. She consistently uses her height and exceptional reach to force opponents to rush decisions and alter shots around the rim.

Ware's presence alone often deters paint touches, pushing opposing offenses to operate on the perimeter. When players do attack the interior, they're met with the challenge of finishing over her length and shot-blocking ability. The defensive tools are there giving Ware a clear pathway to becoming a high-impact rim protector as her game continues to mature.

When you're the No. 7 ranked player in the Class of 2027 nationally and averaging 25 points per game, it's understandable if defensive impact gets overshadowed. That isn't the case with Ojo. Night after night, she draws the opposing team's top scorer—and consistently delivers.

A complete defender with the athleticism and versatility to guard positions 1–5, Ojo thrives in any matchup. She can shut down the post in the first half, then slide out and lock up a primary ball handler in the second without missing a beat. Her willingness to embrace the toughest assignment, combined with her physical tools and competitive edge, makes her one of the most reliable two-way defenders in the region.

The object of the game is to score more than your opponent. However, that advantage is earned on the defensive end of the court. Offense may change the scoreboard, but defense dictates outcomes. The players mentioned above carry disrupt rhythm, redirect game plans, and break opponents over the course of four quarters. This is the kind of defense that doesn't just support winning it creates it.
