Several player all across Georgia put up big numbers in the first round of the GHSA state basketball tournament. Some names are familiar to most, others names may not be well known. All of these players left everything they had on the court and should be proud of their efforts whether their team won or lost.

Mitchell may have had the performance of the first round scoring 29 points and adding 9 rebounds, 8 steals, and 7 steals in the win for Creekside. When her team faced adversity earlier in the season, losing number one ranked junior CeCe Dennis to injury, [player_tooltip player_id='1055876' first='Jacy' last='Mitchell'] stepped her game up and helped lead this young team. She is a talented player who is a legitimate threat from all three levels scoring. Her ball handling allows her take defenders off the dribble with ease and create space for her to shoot the ball from the perimeter where she shoots the ball very well from the three point line and midrange. Her stock has risen drastically as a result of her play this season.

Dunn also had a very well balanced performance in helping lead Cherokee over a young, talented McEachern team in the first round. Dunn's stat line included 28 points scored, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Dunn has cat-like quickness making it hard for defenders to stay in front of her and an excellent shot from the perimeter. She used that combination to keep the defense off balance and guessing what she was going to do with the ball. Dunn is an excellent athlete and she used her speed to create turnovers on defense and turn them into easy points on the break on offense. Dunn is only scratching the surface as a sophomore and should be a player to watch the riot of these playoffs and the next two years in Georgia.

Unfortunately for Leah and her Marietta teammates the season came to an end against a very good, experienced Hillgrove team. Leah, who scored 25 points in the loss, is primed to break out nationally in a big way this Spring and Summer. The confidence she gained with another very impressive year leading her team will only propel her to become an even better player. DeWitt is a scoring machine, scoring the ball in just about every way possible on the court. She has Malaysia Fulwiley type athleticism and you can see the similarities in their game where DeWitt's athleticism is hard to miss on highlight blocks and on ball steals she gets every game. I expect her ranking nationally to continue to climb over the next three years.

[player_tooltip player_id='1242017' first='Davis' last=''] led Brunswick to another state tournament victory over Habersham Central, the second in two years. [player_tooltip player_id='1242017' first='Davis' last=''] scored 22 points for the Lady Pirates and added four rebounds. [player_tooltip player_id='1242017' first='Davis' last=''] is equally dangerous shooting the ball from the perimeter as she is attacking the basket off the drive. Martin has a very high IQ and plays within the rhythm of the offense. She makes the defense pay passing the ball as well. Brunswick runs a lot of their offense through Martin and when she is not scoring the ball, she does an excellent job finding her open teammates. [player_tooltip player_id='1242017' first='Davis' last=''] is also a very good athlete and must be accounted for leaking out for easy buckets on the break.

Kayden is a player who I have thought highly of for awhile. David, whose fundamentals are very sound, plays the game with calm and patience. She does a good job picking her spots to attack on offense and doesn't let the defense speed her up. She is another player who has had to step up due to an injury as GAC's very talented sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='932138' first='Barri' last='Newman'] is out for the season. In round one, David had a solid, impressive stat line finishing with 13 points, eight steals, and five assists. This could and should be a glimpse into the future for the young guard who has the ability to provide that kind of production on nightly basis the next couple years for GAC.
