Regional Tournament Game Notes: Houston at Overton

The game didn't tip off until after the junior was celebrated for scoring over 1000 career points. Then right after tip off she had a quick trip to the bench for getting 2 early fouls. She sat on the bench for the rest of the quarter. At the end of the 3rd quarter and with her team down by 4, she only had 1 point and had missed all 5 of her shot attempts. The 4th quarter a switch went off inside. She started the quarter with back to back steal ands conversions.  As a matter of fact, she had 4 steals in the 4th and 1 in overtime. She also went 4 for 4 from the free throw line and finished the game with 16 points. She is a tough defender and a vocal leader. The sophomore caught my attention the last time I saw Overton play back in November. But I couldn't quite get a feel for her game. Tonight, I got it! She is a scorer. Actually she was the only person that seemed to be able to put the ball in the basket early for Overton. She loves to attack with a floater finish and can knock down the mid range jumper. She also has 3 range. Offensively, the freshman struggled. I had her down making 1 of 7 shot attempts. That didn't&nbsp; stop her from using her length to&nbsp; clean up the boards and get some very key blocks at the end of the game. The junior played some big minutes off the bench using her size and strength to battle with the double-double sophomore, [player_tooltip player_id='646514' first='Kallie' last='Marsh'] in the paint. I have her down with 2 points and 3 rebounds for the game. The sophomore put this team on her back tonight. She didn't settle for being just a distributing point guard. She went scorer mode. She went ‘no one is going to stop me' mode in this game. She got to the basket to score and to the free throw line with single and double coverage all over her. At Houston's last game against Arlington, I noticed a difference in Alexis. She was attacking the basket more in that game. She did the same thing in this game. Meaning her game has grown from being a 3 point shooter. She gets to the basket and to the free throw line. She was 4 for 6 from the line. She is also going to get rebounds and steals.
