Jackson Lumen Christi (19-3) came into the District 82 Finals at Napoleon High School seeking a back-to-back district championship. The top-ranked Titans would need to get past a familiar foe, second-ranked Grass Lake (21-2), to advance in the tournament. I had this matchup circled on my calendar for months, and come hell or high water, I was getting to that gym on Friday night. Ironically, there was a severe thunderstorm warning and a monsoon of rainwater pouring down from above along my journey. The school parking lots overflowed with cars, and upon arrival, the game was sold out. I found a seat courtside in the corner about ten minutes before tip-off, and it was one of the last seats in the gym.

The talent and atmosphere felt like a State Championship Game, which was no surprise. Lumen Christi won the first quarter 15-11, but Grass Lake countered with a 17-13 second quarter to make it 32-29 Lumen Christi heading into halftime. Both teams scored 13 in the third, setting up a tense fourth quarter as the Titans clung to a 45-42 lead. In the fourth, Lumen Christi outscored Grass Lake 18-11 to repeat as District Champions, winning 64-53. Grass Lake made 17 of 30 from the free-throw line, while Lumen Christi was 13 for 20. Both teams connected on four three-pointers in the game.

You play who you play and will play the best at some point in the tournament, but when should the top teams meet? Later in the tournament. It truly was a shame that the number one and number two teams had to meet once again in districts, in a small gym, instead of a quarterfinal or state semifinal as the premier game in a gym suitable for the crowd. Across the divisions, several top ten matchups will occur before a regional final. I hope Michigan can adopt a seeded postseason sooner rather than later, as other states in the Midwest have. Nevertheless, let's take a closer look at some of the top performers from both teams on Friday.

Ruby key plays for Lumen Christi during Friday's District Final that helped the team secure the victory. She worked tremendously hard in the paint to secure rebounds on both ends of the court, scored putbacks, got to the foul line, and swished two free throws. She dove on the floor to cause a jump ball and used her length to contest shots on the defensive end. Ruby poured in seven points and grabbed eight boards for the Titans.

Elise turned in a gritty effort for the Warriors. She scored a tough and-one layup on a drive, then used a great step-through to cause another foul in the paint. Elise earned many trips to the foul line and knocked down six key free throws. She pursued rebounds and gave Grass Lake second-chance scoring opportunities. Elise poured in 10 points for the Warriors and will be a scrappy two-way guard to follow on the circuit this spring.

Stars have to shine in the biggest games. Kenna did exactly that and guided Lumen Christi to a win in the District Finals. Her explosive speed and athleticism were on full display throughout the game. Kenna accelerated in transition to score a coast-to-coast and-one layup at the end of the first half; she took multiple steals the length of the floor for transition buckets. One of Kenna's best was a crossover, quick transfer to her left to convert a contested veer layup in top gear. Kenna buried pull-up jumpers and drilled a deep wing three. She showed her determination in the paint by securing back-to-back offensive rebounds, then hung in mid-air to finish a tough layup over a reaching defender. Kenna levitated after snatching an offensive rebound to score a reverse layup and dished out assists after penetrating the defense. Kenna demonstrated great sportsmanship by helping her opponent up off the floor despite the tense environment. She swatted away a drive attempt with emphasis and closed out quickly to block a perimeter jumper. Kenna led the Titans with a game-high 27 points in the victory.

Reese was the Cascades Conference MVP this year and she was the fiercest Warrior on the court for Grass Lake in the District Finals. Reese muscled into position for an offensive rebound, caused a foul, then buried both free throws. She closed out full speed on a perimeter shooter to force a travel violation and converted a tough, contested layup inside. Reese energized the Warriors after using a speedy back-door cut to beat the defense, ending with a strong catch and finish through contact. She completed the three-point play from the charity stripe. Reese tied up a ball in the corner, jumped way up to bat down a pass on the perimeter, and dished a great dump off pass to a teammate in transition. Her ball pressure forced an over-and-back turnover. Reese had multiple steals and her explosive drives earned several trips the line. She knocked down seven free throws and led Grass Lake with 13 points.

Kiera was an unsung hero for Grass Lake in the District Finals. She was the girl who stepped up to give the Warriors perimeter scoring in key moments. Kiera drained three triples and went flying in from the perimeter to secure a missed shot, then scored a tough reverse layup. She worked hard on defense and gave the Warriors a boost with 10 points.

Lucy delivered an unforgettable performance for Lumen Christi in the District Finals. She was cool, calm, collected, clutch, and outright dominant for the Titans. Lucy shifted into high gear, blew by her defender down the baseline, side-stepped the help, switched hands, and scored the layup with her left. She tipped a contested pass to herself in transition, grabbed the loose ball, kept her composure, and scored the bucket. Lucy pivoted to line herself up on the perimeter and drained the open three. With the score deadlocked at 42, she delivered a momentum-swinging dagger to close the third quarter. Lucy buried a quick catch-and-release three-pointer off the hop to put Lumen Christi ahead. She penetrated down the lane, spun, switched hands, and finished at the rim. Lucy threw a great bounce pass assist to Kenna cutting backdoor and a perfect pass over the defense on a SLOB to Kenna for the and-one late. Lucy posted 22 points in the win.
