Each player brings a different set of tools to the table, and there is always a role where players thrive playing high school basketball and grassroots basketball over the spring and summer. Sometimes I like to highlight players who excel in a particular phase of the game on both ends of the floor. In this article, we'll look at some defensive prospects who can turn some college coaches' heads.

The Milwaukee Academy of Science guard has always been a smart defender who picks up on the flow of a game quickly. Guy reads the game well and has the length and athleticism to pressure the ball handler or get into the passing lanes. She competes on the defensive end of the floor and has always taken pride in her defensive reps. Guy can be a player who can find a role at the next level early because of how well she defends on the perimeter.

The Madison-area native is a versatile player on both ends of the floor, but we'll focus on the defensive end today. Thompson is a rangey wing who is comfortable defending all five positions at the high school level and could defend the one through three or four, depending on the level she plays at in college. Thompson is a physical player who is willing to switch, compete, and put her body on the line to help her team win.

The De Pere wing is a player who has bought into her role, doing all the little things to help her team win games. Whenever you see a player who consistently plays major minutes at the high school and for a talented grassroots program, who doesn't always score in double figures, usually does a little of everything, which is what Fischer does. She has a mix of lateral quickness and physicality, which allows her to switch on the perimeter, and she's a player who will crash the defensive glass and help close out defensive possessions.

The 6'1 forward was among the state leaders in blocked shots this past high school season, and it's easy to understand why. The multi-sport athlete has the length to defend around the basket, and she can move her feet around the basket to be an effective help-side defender. There is room for her to grow as she gets further away from an injury that took her grassroots season a year ago, but she's one of the more intriguing rim protectors in Wisconsin's 2027 class.
