Future Stars Shine At Virginia AAU State Championships

The AAU Virginia State Championships came to Boo Williams Sportsplex this past weekend. The event was packed with high-level matchups, and standout performances. Giving viewers some of the best girls basketball the Hampton Roads region has to offer. As the temperatures outside continue to rise, several players inside Boo Williams turned up the heat with impressive performances on both ends of the floor. From tough shot-making to lockdown defense and nonstop energy, the opening day delivered plenty of memorable moments. Here are a few of the standouts.    The recent Regent commit enters the upcoming season with added pressure. Returning to a Warwick team that lost its top two leading scorers to graduation. However, if Swords' performance this weekend is any indication, she looks ready to carry the load as the number one option.   A reliable shooter with the ability to stretch the defense. Swords can get her shot off under pressure and knock it down with accuracy. As a steady off guard, she showed the ability to feed the post, and settle the offense. Giving her the ability to make the right play when needed. Her ball handling is still developing. However, once that part of her game sharpens, Swords has the tools to lead Warwick as its primary option next season.     Another surprise emerging from the loaded Class of 2029 guard group in Hampton Roads was Carmen Rivera . The Cape Henry Collegiate standout introduced herself to the crowd with an impressive all-around performance. Playing a year up, Rivera set the tone with relentless on-ball defensive pressure. Often forcing turnovers, rushed passes, and disrupted possessions throughout the game.   Long, athletic, and equipped with a quick first step and strong lateral movement. Rivera is adept at creating problems in the passing lanes. Offensively, that same explosiveness allowed her to attack defenders off the dribble, get downhill, and finish at the rim. Her energy and defensive instincts immediately stood out, making her one of the more intriguing young guards to watch moving forward.     As previously observed and documented, Brabham can score. Her ability to get to the rim off the dribble, combined with a developing perimeter game, gives her a strong foundation to become a high-level offensive player. Because of that scoring ability, her defensive game is often overlooked. An oversight that does a disservice to how impactful she can be on that end of the floor.   Brabham has the length, athleticism, and versatility to defend positions 1 through 3. Her quick first step and reach allow her to disrupt passing lanes, block shots, and strip ball handlers cleanly. Rarely out of position, she uses her athletic ability to recover quickly and make plays in space. While her offensive game continues to develop for the next level, it may ultimately be her defensive presence that keeps her on the floor.     With less than a year of organized basketball under her belt, Denton has picked up the game remarkably quickly. A raw prospect with high upside. Denton already shows natural instincts as a rim protector and rebounder, consistently blocking shots and securing tough boards in traffic.   A traditional back-to-the-basket player. Denton's offensive game is still developing. However, the rapid growth she has shown in such a short amount of time makes her a player worth monitoring closely. As her footwork, touch, and overall offensive skill set continue to progress. Expect Denton to develop into a formidable offensive presence to match her impact on the defensive end.    From emerging young guards to developing post prospects. The AAU State Championships showed once again that the future of girls basketball in the Hampton Roads region is loaded with talent, versatility, and high-level upside.
