As the Summer Circuit heats up, don't make the mistake of thinking the high school scene has gone quiet.   Because behind the AAU highlights and travel-ball headlines, Hampton Roads girls basketball has been shifting. Coaching changes. Transfers. New roles. Rising expectations. Pressure mounting on stars. Questions surrounding contenders, and as we head toward the 2026–2027 girls basketball season there are some tough questions that need to be asked, and I am here to ask them. Already owning three state championships. Ojo now enters her final season chasing a fourth ring following the retirement of legendary head coach Darnell Dozier. Creating a storyline that adds even more weight to an already historic career.   But championships alone do not define Ojo's greatness.   A true five-tool player, Ojo impacts the game in every imaginable way. Her scoring jumps off the stat sheet, averaging 25 points per game. However, it is the details of her game that separate her from most stars. The hustle plays, rebounding, and defensive intensity. The willingness to embrace the toughest matchup on the floor every single night.   She does not just carry the spotlight she carries responsibility. After a hard-fought run to the VISAA state title game. The Catholic High School Crusaders proved they belonged among Virginia's elite before eventually running out of gas on the biggest stage. With only one senior departing, the Crusaders enter the 2026–2027 season as a legitimate contender to finish the job. Led by one of the most versatile players in Hampton Roads, Justice Brown-Jones.   Brown-Jones is the definition of a matchup nightmare.   A true do-it-all combo guard, she possesses the rare ability to impact all five positions on the floor. Strong and physical enough to battle post players inside. Yet skilled enough to initiate offense, create off the bounce, and stretch defenses from the perimeter, her versatility allows Catholic to play multiple styles without sacrificing production.   But what separates Brown-Jones is not just versatility — it is adaptability.   Few players can seamlessly shift from guarding bigger opponents in the paint one possession to facilitating offense the next. Her basketball IQ, vision, toughness, and expanding offensive arsenal have made her one of the more coveted recruits in the Class of 2027.   Now entering what could become a defining senior campaign, the expectations are clear.   Anything short of another deep postseason run will feel unfinished.   If Brown-Jones can lead Catholic to a state championship, it would not only cement the Crusaders as one of the premier programs in the VISAA. She would solidify her legacy as one of the most impactful players of this era in Hampton Roads girls basketball.     Sharing the floor with Justice Brown-Jones is another major reason the Catholic High School Crusaders enter the season with championship aspirations.   An impact scorer and natural playmaker. Loritts brings a level of efficiency and versatility that makes her invaluable to Catholic's success. While she may not always dominate the box score through sheer volume, what stands out most is her ability to maximize opportunities. Every basket feels timely. Every possession feels purposeful.   Loritts understands how to impact winning.Whether attacking gaps in the defense, making the extra pass, cleaning the glass, or creating offense within the flow of the game. Loritts consistently fills the stat sheet in ways that often go unnoticed until the final buzzer sounds. A skill that makes complete players dangerous.   If the Crusaders are going to finish what they started last season, Loritts will play a massive role in determining just how far this group can go.    Did Great Bridge Overachieve?    In one of the more competitive regions in Hampton Roads girls basketball, Mike Hyman guided the Great Bridge Wildcats to a hard-earned 15–9 regular season record despite not having a single starter taller than 5'8”.   That success was fueled in large part by the outstanding play of Kelsey King. A dynamic scorer with a relentless motor, King has proven she can trade baskets with some of the region's premier offensive talents.   Whether attacking downhill, creating off the dribble, or capitalizing in transition, she brings an aggressive offensive mindset that keeps defenses under constant pressure.   King's impact extends far beyond scoring, defensively, her activity level changes games. Her quick hands create havoc in passing lanes, turning deflections into transition opportunities while stripping ball handlers who become careless off the bounce. She plays with an edge that energizes Great Bridge on both ends of the floor. Despite Great Bridge often giving up size, King never shies away from physicality.   She willingly battles for tough rebounds in traffic, extending possessions and helping compensate for the Wildcats' lack of height through effort and toughness. That willingness to embrace contact embodies the identity Coach Hyman's squad played with throughout the season.   Great Bridge may not overwhelm opponents physically — but with players like Kelsey King, they rarely back down from anyone.
