Eye-Opening Performances in Summer League Play

Summer basketball serves as a measuring stick for growth and development between the end of the high school basketball season and the start of summer league play. It reveals the players who have worked on their games through training and/or during the travel-ball season. In this article, we look at some of the players I saw in the Ribault Summer League who have elevated their games, embraced bigger roles than they had a year ago, and taken important steps forward in their development.    [player_tooltip player_id='514915' first='Maeghan' last='Hicks'] was one of the most impressive players on the floor. What immediately stood out was her tenacity on the defensive end and her determination when attacking the basket. She played with purpose, and when she decided to get downhill, she often found a way to get to the rim. Her midrange game was also effective, but more importantly, she was confident and decisive with the basketball. There was very little hesitation in her game, and she consistently made aggressive plays when opportunities presented themselves. She played with a fiery edge, dove for loose balls, and competed hard on every possession. Even as the score began to get out of reach, Hicks never backed down, continuing to play with intensity and helping set the tone for her team until the final whistle.       [player_tooltip player_id='1003136' first='Skylar' last='Wilson'] showcased her skills in a new role and with a new team at Ribault, spending much of the night running the point. While the timing and chemistry are still developing, Wilson was impressive with her decision-making and poise on the floor. She played with confidence, made good reads, and consistently put her team in position to be successful. Wilson has the ability to score when possessions break down, and she showed that ability with several strong moves to the basket. Her quickness allows her to create opportunities for herself, while her passing ability helps create opportunities for her teammates. The key for Wilson will be finding the balance in the games. Wilson appears poised to be an engine that helps Ribault go. She will make a huge impact at the point position, and it won't be about the points, but about the leadership and ability to make sound decisions on the court. Furthermore, be a playmaker on a team with a talented roster and get the ball to her teammates on the perimeter and in the paint.     [player_tooltip player_id='1320586' first='Tania' last='Washington'] was arguably the most improved player on the court. Her energy, confidence, and overall effectiveness were noticeably higher than in the previous seasons. Washington scored effectively on the inside, played tough defense, and consistently prevented easy baskets. She appeared much more intentional and aware in everything she did on the floor. Her understanding of the offense and defense was evident, and she embraced a leadership role by helping put teammates in the right positions. Washington was active on the glass, securing offensive rebounds and defensive boards while also initiating the break when the opportunities were there. More than anything, Washington looked like a more complete player. Her growth in confidence, decision-making, and overall impact was evident throughout the game, making her one of the night's standout performers.     [player_tooltip player_id='1379557' first='Brinkley' last='Todd'] impressed with her ability to play the point guard position, but also play off the ball at the two. She has a good outside shooting stroke and is very consistent in the midrange area. Todd can also shoot the three-ball but is more deadly in the midrange area. She has very good handles and can create her own shot off the dribble. In transition, she has the ability to change direction and has good handles to manipulate the defender. Even at the two position, she easily went into point guard mode with her passing and court vision.     [player_tooltip player_id='1313764' first='Nyla' last='Parsons'] was the focal point of Oakleaf's offensive attack and is arguably the engine that makes everything go. She plays with a relentless motor and brings a level of energy that impacts the game from start to finish. Parsons showcased good ball-handling ability, crafty finishes around the basket, and the ability to get to the rim and create her own shot and scoring opportunities. Parsons plays with confidence and great pace. She constantly puts pressure on the defense.     [player_tooltip player_id='1850679' first='Anyssa' last='Perkins'] (cover) is another player who has shown growth from the end of the high school season to the start of summer league. While she had a few high-scoring games during the travel season, her greatest asset is her defense. Perkins does an excellent job pressuring the basketball, creating discomfort for opposing ball handlers, and creating scoring opportunities for her team through her defensive intensity. During the summer league game, she came up with a steal in the press, used a head fake to freeze the defender, and scored. She brings energy and speed on the defensive end and can impact the game by forcing turnovers, disrupting offensive flow, and creating transition opportunities. Perkins could play an important role this year in a team that will have plenty of offensive options.
