The Au Sable Shootout has been a staple team camp for seven years, started by Director Ray Kimball. Located in beautiful Tawas City, teams have the opportunity to head up for a day trip or make a vacation of it by staying for both days of the shootout. The Au Sable Shootout was actually the first event I ever did with my new varsity program back in 2022. I remember how fun it was to play a unique mix of teams and stay in a resort town. As I've transitioned from coaching to scouting, I circle this event on my coverage calendar every year as a golden opportunity to find new prospects from lesser-known schools. Our goal at PGH is to cover everybody, and the Au Sable Shootout is a great stop along the way to accomplish that mission. Here are a few of the prospects who stood out during the first two hours of games on Wednesday.

Maylin is a sharpshooter in the Hemlock program who had her way inside and outside at the Au Sable Shootout. She scored a strong contested layup off two feet and maneuvered inside to score an offensive rebound putback. Maylin attacked with her dribble, penetrated a gap, got the driving edge, and used a sweet fake pass move to score a silky smooth stretch finish layup at the rim. Maylin knocked down a three from the corner with a confident stroke and buried another triple from the wing. She showed off her court vision by dishing out no-look bounce passes to give teammates open looks around the basket.

Makinley is an incoming freshman for Olivet to be excited about. She is going to make an immediate impact at the varsity level. Makinley already has length, athleticism, and a versatile skill for her age. She shot the ball confidently from beyond the arc and drained a smooth wing three off the catch. Makinley kept her hands active on the defensive end and took a steal the length of the court, pushing with her right and left to score the fast-break bucket. She scans the floor, dribbling with her eyes up in transition. Makinley made a great first impression at the Au Sable Shootout.

Sophie showed her toughness and versatility at the Au Sable Shootout. She competed hard the entire game through adversity. Sophie rotated from the help side to block a shot and secured rebounds with strength inside. She converted a tough layup in traffic and kept her hands active on the defensive end. Sophie was hobbled by injury, but continued to give her all. She used a jab step to create space from a defender, then buried the open corner three. Sophie split the gap off the dribble to score a floater and denied entry passes into the post to generate deflections. She drained another smooth catch-and-shoot jumper from distance, demonstrating character, length, and skills that translate to the next level.

Sage is a talented volleyball player who's also a phenomenal basketball prospect. She had a great day for Hemlock at the Au Sable Shootout. Sage combines effort, hustle, length, and skill to make an overwhelming impact on the court. She caught passes with good hands inside and went up strong to score off two feet. Sage was active on the offensive glass throughout the game and made an outstanding hustle play by sprinting to chase down a loose ball and throwing it off a defender to save a possession. She moved to open space off the ball and knocked down a smooth baseline jumper. Sage went on a stretch where she took over. She batted down a pass up top, secured the steal, then pushed the ball up the court with pace using both hands, scoring a contested layup. On the next possession, Sage swiped the ball away up top again, pushed with her off hand all the way to the basket, scoring the contested layup off two feet.

Isla gave Oscoda a spark with her perimeter accuracy at the Au Sable Shootout. Her hot spot was on the wing, and she swished at least three from beyond the arc with a confident stroke that caught not only my attention, but also the refs. She sprinted in to grab two offensive rebounds on the same possession and dished out a nice bounce pass to an open teammate.

Aly made a great impression with her hard-nosed takes to the basket at the Au Sable Shootout. She ripped by a defender on a baseline drive, absorbed the contact, and scored the and-one bucket at the rim. Aly made a quick basket cut, caught the pass with strong hands, and earned a trip to the free throw line. She attacked downhill off the dribble and forced the defense to put her back on the line, then drained both free throws. Aly changed speeds and handled the ball with poise against pressure. She'll be a versatile prospect to follow at Olivet.

Ashley has length, athleticism, and potential as a wing-forward that immediately stands out. She worked hard to grab rebounds on both ends and scored putbacks. Ashley is very mobile, and her high motor is difficult for opposing posts to keep off the glass. She's going to be an extremely successful player at Oscoda over the coming years.
