Next Up: Five 2028 Stars Ready to Own Their Junior Year

One could argue junior year is among the most important seasons of a high school athlete's career. That argument would be solid.   For many athletes, recruiting becomes very real during this year. Offers can become official, while college programs begin evaluating prospects more seriously.   Meanwhile, these athletes are no longer underclassmen. They are stepping into leadership roles with two varsity seasons already behind them.   Additionally, junior year provides an opportunity to establish themselves as legitimate next-level prospects. Development must begin translating into consistent production.   Having one of the greatest jobs in the world, I get to watch that process firsthand. I've had the privilege of seeing several talented 2028 prospects live and in living color.   Some have impressed with skill, while others have stood out through toughness, IQ, athleticism, or leadership.   However, these five have consistently caught my attention.   Here are the five Class of 2028 Lady Hoopers who have impressed me the most.    The nationally ranked Lauryn Lorrits enters her junior season already holding numerous Division I offers. Last season, she helped lead Catholic to a state runner-up finish. Moreover, Lorrits owns one of the most college-ready games I've seen in the 2028 class.   The quick left-handed scorer can produce from all three levels. She uses strength when necessary but can also beat defenders with finesse. Additionally, her athleticism allows her to rebound against bigger players. Meanwhile, her strength creates mismatches against smaller defenders.   However, Lorrits separates herself with how well she processes the game. She consistently plays from the neck up and rarely looks rushed. Because of her versatility, Lorrits can impact games in numerous roles. She can handle, defend, rebound, facilitate, or create her own offense. Furthermore, her deceptive mid-range game gives defenders another problem to solve.   Most importantly, Lorrits can impose her will when games tighten late. By season's end, expect Lorrits' name to become increasingly prominent in national conversations.     McKenzie Cooper is undoubtedly one of the physically strongest players in Virginia's 2028 class. However, focusing solely on her strength would be a disservice to her complete game. Cooper is a throwback forward who embraces physical basketball around the basket. She comfortably bangs bodies, battles for difficult rebounds, and finishes through contact. In many ways, Cooper embodies the traditional power forward role coaches love.   However, Cooper's versatility makes her especially intriguing. She can put the ball on the floor and create off the dribble. Additionally, she possesses soft hands, smooth touch, and shooting range extending to 19 feet. That range allows Cooper to stretch defenses before attacking mismatches inside. Furthermore, her court vision and IQ allow her to find teammates when defensive rotations arrive.   Cooper is also a consistent double-double threat whenever she takes the floor. Defensively, her quick first step and length allow her to alter and redirect shots. Consequently, opposing offenses must account for her presence around the basket. Already past 1,000 career points, Cooper continues building an impressive résumé. Expect her to establish herself among Virginia's top 2028 post players this season.     If speed kills, [player_tooltip player_id='978258' first='Sasha' last='Hodge'] is an assassin. The lightning-fast point guard combines elite anticipation with an explosive first step. Defensively, she seemingly teleports into passing lanes before opponents recognize the opening. Additionally, Hodge applies relentless ball pressure and consistently disrupts opposing guards. Her combination of speed and anticipation makes her difficult to escape in the open floor.   Offensively, Hodge operates as a traditional point guard who keeps the scorers around her involved. She delivers sharp, intelligent passes while displaying excellent court vision and timing. However, her decision-making might be the most underrated part of her offensive game. Hodge understands when to distribute and when the situation demands her own offense. When she attacks, her first step allows her to reach the basket effortlessly.   Meanwhile, her steadily improving range forces defenders to respect her farther from the basket. As defenses expand, Hodge uses her passing ability to create opportunities for teammates. Ultimately, her speed controls tempo, while her decision-making makes that speed even more dangerous.     While some might consider [player_tooltip player_id='1201310' first='Makayla' last='Louis'] a surprise pick, I consider her more of a sleeper. Lewis possesses an unassuming game, but her versatility quickly becomes noticeable. She combines a point guard's vision and passing ability with the interior game of a power forward. Consequently, that unique skill set makes Louis one of the more useful players in her class.   Additionally, her size and movement without the ball create difficult matchups for opposing post players. Meanwhile, her touch, vision, and passing ability make her equally challenging for smaller guards. Louis can facilitate offense, operate inside, or create opportunities without dominating the basketball.   However, Louis separates herself most with her basketball IQ. She consistently understands where she needs to be and why. Offensively, Louis creates opportunities, extends possessions, and puts herself in position to finish. Defensively, she anticipates actions and positions herself to disrupt opposing offenses. Ultimately, Louis impacts winning in several ways that never appear in the box score.     [player_tooltip player_id='1823258' first='Georgia' last='Jones'] is an off guard who shoots just under 40 percent from beyond the arc. Naturally, that efficiency forces defenses to extend whenever she is on the floor. While Jones has the green light, she understands her shooting gravity creates opportunities elsewhere. She frequently draws defenders outside before feeding the post or continuing the offense for better opportunities.   Additionally, Jones can play and defend positions one through three. Over the past two seasons, she has steadily developed while her overall game continues maturing. Consequently, Jones has emerged as one of the Shenandoah Valley's most talented players. Her combination of shooting, versatility, and improving decision-making gives her considerable value on both ends.   With graduation reshaping the roster, Jones now has an opportunity to assume a larger leadership role. This season belongs to her. Expect Jones to establish herself among Virginia's best players in the Class of 2028.    Ultimately, these five have the talent, experience, and opportunity to make their junior seasons impossible to ignore.
