Florida's Rural classification features a strong group of teams with several familiar programs looking to make another run at a state championship. Williston returns as the defending champion after putting together an impressive season, but Jay, Hilliard, Blountstown, and Wildwood all have the experience and talent to challenge for the title. With multiple teams returning key contributors from deep postseason runs, the Rural classification could once again deliver a competitive race to Jacksonville. Here's a look at the teams to watch this season.

2025–26 Record: 22–2 | Rural State Champion

Williston enters the season as the defending Rural state champion after suffering just two losses last year against larger schools. The Red Devils lose a major piece in Ashlyn Young to graduation but return a strong group that should keep them among the top teams in the classification. They also have young depth coming off the bench to give them additional options as the season progresses. Williston has the pieces to reload and make another run at a state title.

2025–26 Record: 15–6

Wildwood came within single digits of eventual state champion Williston in the Region Final when reaching the Elite Eight last season. The Wildcats consistently challenge themselves against larger schools throughout the year to help prepare themselves for the postseason. They lose several players to graduation but return their star player and have young talent that will need to step into bigger roles. If those players make the expected progress, Wildwood should remain a tough matchup in the Rural classification.

2025–26 Record: 24–6 | Rural Final Four

Hilliard is coming off a strong season that ended with a trip to the Rural Final Four. The Flashes lose a couple of pieces to graduation but return several talented underclassmen who gained valuable experience last season. That experience should help them take on bigger roles this year as Hilliard looks to make another deep postseason run. With a strong group returning, they should once again be in the mix among the top teams in the classification.

2025–26 Record: 25–5 | Rural State Runner-Up

Jay came very close to capturing the state championship last season and will enter this year looking to finish the job. The Royals lose some pieces to graduation but return their top trio, giving them a strong foundation to build around. This is a special senior group with the experience and motivation to make another run at the title. After coming up just short last season, Jay will have plenty of reason to believe they can take the final step.

2025–26 Record: 25–3 | Rural Final Four

Blountstown was one of the closest teams to knocking off eventual state champion Williston last season, falling by just two points in Jacksonville. The Tigers return the majority of their roster and have an opportunity to build on a 25-win campaign. With so much of the group back and the experience of playing in the Final Four, Blountstown has a chance to make even more noise this season. They should be one of the teams with a legitimate shot to challenge for the Rural crown.

Beyond the primary contenders, Fort White, Holmes County, and Paxton are additional programs worth monitoring in the Rural classification. Each has an opportunity to establish itself in the field, and a strong start could help any of them emerge as a postseason threat. Who else will be looking to surprise me and the rest of the state?
