On Monday, January 20th, Saginaw Valley State University hosted a high school showcase with two games. In game one, Anchor Bay defeated Davison in overtime 58-51 and Frankenmuth bested Saginaw Heritage 39-31 in game two. To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Cardinals played a clip from his famous “I Have a Dream” speech before each game, which gave all a moment to reflect upon the words of Dr. King. The event was well organized with hot concessions, media coverage, and two competitive matchups. I will be back for a third time next season and I suggest high school teams reach out to SVSU sooner rather than later. Here are a few players from Frankenmuth and Heritage who earned recognition during the game for their performance on the court.

Grace was determined to help her team win against one of the best teams in D1 and that's exactly what she did. Grace picked up the offense early, using a screen to drive by defenders for a layup. She utilized an effective pivot dribble to beat her defender for a baseline floater and knocked down her free throw after scoring a strong layup off two feet. Grace deflected passes and created multiple steals on defense that she turned into assists. Grace ended the game with 9 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Her complete performance was crucial to Frankenmuth's 39-31 win over Heritage.

When the game isn't "pretty" it comes down to determination/toughness, and leaders step up to make a difference in the outcome. That's exactly what Rosemary did for the Eagles at the SVSU MLK Classic. She drove hard to the basket to score layups and pivoted to hit a contested floater over an outstretched defender. Rosemary buried a straightaway 3, knocked down two free throws from the charity stripe, and battled to secure rebounds. The highlight play that seemed to turn the tide of the game was when Rosemary chased down a transition layup and climbed the ladder to reject the shot out of bounds. She gave the Eagles 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks in a statement win over Heritage.

Zariya is a prospect with one of the highest ceilings in Michigan's 2028 class. What she showed at the SVSU MLK Classic is her trajectory to be a wing or possibly shooting guard at the college level. Zariya's foot speed, height, frame, and offensive versatility jump out. She can face up and drive to the basket or knockdown shots from the perimeter. Zariya started the game with a smooth corner 3 and two downhill drives for layups. She used her length to generate steals and block a shot on the defensive end. Zariya nearly had a double-double with 8 points and 9 rebounds for Heritage.

Jayla has consistently been an impact player for Heritage all season and she was again at the SVSU MLK Classic. Jayla buried two confident corner 3s, swept the ball baseline to beat her defender for a layup off two feet, and drove hard to cause a foul on her way to the basket. Jayla led the team with 10 points and dished out 3 assists. She is already making a strong case for SVL All-Conference as a freshman (has my vote) and will be a marquee guard to watch throughout her career for the Hawks.
