That might be changing soon.
Coming into the 2019-20 season, the Tigers already knew they had a young and talented roster that if it could take a big step forward, was on the verge of potentially morphing into one of the top teams in Class 4A. With a few players progressing ahead of schedule and an unexpected incoming transfer showing up just at the right time, that day might be closer than the Erie faithful originally thought possible.
“We might not have a kid who’s going to a UConn or a Stanford but I’ve got seven kids who can play somewhere at the next level,” Erie head coach Sarah Pfeifer said. “Our strength is our depth and we’re really excited that we can have a different girl carry us for stretches on a given night.”
Let’s dive a little deeper into a roster that might contain as many sleepers as any other in Colorado.
Anna HefnerLast season, the Erie Tigers went 16-10 and reached the Class 4A Sweet 16. Their leading scorer was junior Anna Hefner, an undersized but tough 5-foot-11 center who averaged 10.2 points as a sophomore while pulling down six rebounds a night.
The Tigers’ next leading scorer was Grace Moyers, and quick point guard who is now a sophomore after scoring 8.6 points a game as a freshman.
Fellow Class of 2022 future graduate Deb Altshuler averaged 7.5 points and is developing into one of the top recruits in her class. Altshuler, who is also getting stronger as she develops physically, can fill it up and led the Tigers with 29 made 3-pointers last season while shooting 30 percent (29 for 97) from 3-point range.
Yet another sophomore still, Edie Morrow averaged 2.6 points, four rebounds and led the team with 1.8 steals per game. Morrow has plenty of length and athletic tools that give her significant upside along with her high basketball IQ and developing offensive game.
Edie MorrowThen there’s junior Genevieve Gudino, who led Holy Family with 14.9 points on the team’s way to the Final Four last season before transferring to Erie. The sudden presence of PGH Colorado’s No. 14-ranked 2021 player provides an unexpected boost to a group that already expected to be pretty good in 2019-20.
“Genevieve comes in and she’s a great leader and we still have that core sophomore group,” Pfiefer said. “They work really hard and they’re so dedicated so there’s a lot of excitement around our team and we’ll be really excited once we all get on the same page and get going.”
Even sophomore Ava Welty, who led the Tigers with 2.1 assists per game last season but is more likely to play lacrosse at the next level, is a promising young athlete on this roster.
It has been a while since Erie was a place to look for college recruits for look for players. But it might be time they start glancing back in that direction.
