Continue ReadingAfter the new year, we plan to start covering the action from the day in a different way than we did in the first half of the season. We noticed that most people did not care to read a singular story on two teams of which they have never heard of, thus the Daily Dive was born. Each night, or following afternoon, we will post a Daily Dive on the previous day’s action with headlines and top performers, given there is enough substance to run one. There will always be three main headlines followed by a few blurbs about players or teams from the day before. To follow is our Daily Dive from the games that took place on 1/9/20.
Des Moines finds a way to win a close game against Van Meter
Van Meter visited Des Moines Christian on Thursday night and came away with a tough fought 49-40 win. Des Moines Christian used a 20-point second quarter and allowed just three points in the third quarter. For the hosts, Moriah Prewitt scored 23 points and continuously took the ball to the line and drew fouls. She knocked down 11-of-16 from the foul line in leading her team to the win. The 7th ranked player in Iowa’s 2021 class also had steals and grabbed eight rebounds, six of which were offensive. Fellow junior Megan Miller had five assists for Des Moines Christian while adding in 11 points. Junior Kate Muller was the only player for Des Moines Christian who hit a 3-pointer and she was 3-for-8 from behind the line and finished with 12 points in the game. Van Meter senior Clair Lauterbach had a very stellar game for the away team as she scored 19 points and came away with 11 steals. She started the game off 4-of-5 from behind the line and really pushed her team into almost pulling off the upset. Both Natalie Barth and Jorja Hanselman had solid games on the boards combining for 24 rebounds. Barth had 10 rebounds and added in four points while battling foul trouble throughout the first half. Hanselman was outrageously good on the boards grabbing 14 rebounds and added in eight points. It was a solid effort by Van Meter but they fell just short.
Okoboji improves to 12-0
A year after going 19-3 and losing seven of their 12 varsity players due to graduation a year ago, many thought that Okoboji might have been a little down this year. In fact, the opposite has happened as they sit at 12-0 on the year. A trio of seniors lead Okoboji in scoring. DMACC Magan Christopherson leads the team scoring 16.3 points a game, while Indiana State commit Kallyn Stumbo has poured in 14.8 points a game, and DMACC commit Camry Jones is adding in 10.4 points a game while also adding in 10.3 points a game. They are scoring 58.1 points a game while allowing 37.0 points a game. Okoboji has a great chance to finish the season undefeated but it is yet to be seen how they correlate their regular-season success into the postseason with a combined opponents record of 46-69, seventh worse in 3A through the first week of January.
Ellie Foster scores her 1,000th point
Last night Dike-New Hartford’s Ellie Foster scored her 1,000th point in a 60-31 win over West Fork. This year Foster is scoring 18.1 points a game and has helped lead her team to an 8-1 record as they are very much in the conversation for a state title at the end of the year. Foster is committed to UW-Milwaukee and has a good chance at eclipsing 1,400 points in her career if Dike-New Hartford gets all the way to the state championship game.
- Sophomore Madison Craighead had 17 points and 17 rebounds in Sioux City North’s loss to Siouxland Christian.
- Sophomore Taylor Harpenau scored 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and sophomore Emily Dreckman had 10 points and 11 assists in the MMCRU win over George-Little Rock
