The girls game of the final day of the 2026 AVCTL/GWAL Basketball Challenge pitted a pair of highly ranked teams in 5A Bishop Carroll and 6A Derby. It followed on the heals of the opener between Goddard and Wichita Northwest and the sandwich game of Eisenhower and Wichita Heights. Take a look at the several standouts below. The day's opener pitted Goddard against Wichita Northwest.

Bishop Carroll

The Washburn University commit's ability to create her own shot, score at all three levels, motor and hustle were pretty much unmatched by the Panthers. Unfortunately she and her teammates missed several bushels of open layups and short jumpers. McCorry showed why she is among the best floor savvy players in the state though and makes a variety of quality passes in different situations. Defensively, she reads plays and offensive players' individual movements that result in challenged shots, deflections and steals. Defending the entire 84 foot floor is something she did repeatedly.

Steven has quickly become one of the top two-way point guards in the state. She harasses ball handlers the length of the floor, jumps passing lanes and scores steals at a sprint and uses her strong handles and speed to beat back court double-teams. And with her head on a swivel she made plays and created her own shots, burying perimeter jumpers including with range. Steven and the Golden Eagles missed what seemed like a score of open layups and short jumpers. Improvement in that department and consistency in sealing the shot will be something I will be watching.

While Mount may not have registered much in the scoring department where she especially stood out was battling in the paint. I hone in players who not only box out consistently well but especially those who, when a shot goes up, finds somebody to put a body on before looking for the ball. And with her quickness and long, wiry frame she usually took an opponent out of the play. Mount is long limbed, has solid hops and a runs and defends with a high motor. Expect her to debut solidly in the next rankings.

Derby

From the opening Panther possession the Elon University commit attracted double-teams that denied entry passes and defended her on the inside in case she caught the pass. A long, fast and athletic scorer Askew battled it well, did not force a play if it was not there and found other ways to help her team. Offensive rebounding and shot blocking among them. Transition opportunities gave her some easy buckets and she buried a couple three-balls when Carroll defenders did not pick her up.

Fox was arguably the most consistent problem for the Golden Eagles. Her length, quickness, athleticism and transition speed enabled her to match up well with the Bishop Carroll guards on both ends. Over the past year plus she has become a tighter on-ball defender, really catching up with her offensive chops. One play that stood out to me was a recovery from giving up a driving lane to get the shot block. Another, while working in the left corner, she made a really good ball fake to quickly drive right toward the middle of the lane to create a shot.

Demel came into her senior season sporting a reputation as being a strong perimeter shooter. She let that fact be know right away, attracting Bishop Carroll attention the rest of the game. Having a lengthy, athletic frame and a strong motor the McLennan Community College softball commit competed solidly on the boards and changed ends well.
