The Week That Was No. 10: Rewriting history

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There was a time when scoring 2,000 career points would get you a feature story in the sports section of a decent-sized newspaper. Most weeks we are happy to make the rare achievement a prominent feature of our weekly recap. It's a heck of an accomplishment! But timing is everything. Unfortunately for South Dakota State commit [player_tooltip player_id='458305' first='Audrey' last='Shindelar'] of Stewartville, her 2,000-point milestone was overshadowed somewhat during the Week That Was No. 10.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>With nearly a week having passed, and coverage of the event stretching nationwide, the biggest milestone of the week – actually the biggest scoring record in the history of Minnesota girl's basketball – took place last Tuesday in Crosby-Ironton. That's where University of Minnesota commit [player_tooltip player_id='205310' first='Tori' last='Oehrlein'] of the Rangers broke Rebekah Dahlman's career-scoring record of 5,060 points. Overshadowed on the night was the fact Tori also had a career-high 57 points in the game. We dedicated an entire story to capturing Tuesday's events. <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/2026/01/tori-oehrlein-gives-us-a-night-to-remember/">Click here</a></strong> to read it.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>3,000 reasons to celebrate</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Tori wasn't the only player to post an impressive career milestone during week 10, though, as both [player_tooltip player_id='498658' first='Morgan' last='Mathiowetz'] of Sleepy Eye St. Mary's and [player_tooltip player_id='782558' first='Kate' last='Thayer'] of Northome-Kelliher topped the 3,000-point mark. That accomplishment puts them behind only Oehrlein and Kentucky commit [player_tooltip player_id='252381' first='Maddyn' last='Greenway'] among active high school players. It also places them among the top 30 scorers in state history.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Mathiowetz is a highly skilled point guard ranked in the top 10 in Minnesota's class of 2027. She has been a dominant varsity performer from a very young age and has already committed to Division 1 North Dakota State. With more than a year of high school basketball remaining, the reigning Prep Girls Hoops Class A Player of the Year has a chance to catch her sister <strong>Madison Mathiowetz</strong> whose 3,762 career points is 7th best all-time. Maddie is in the final season of an outstanding collegiate career at South Dakota State.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Compared to the others on this list, Thayer has operated in relative anonymity at Northome-Kelliher. We need to shoulder some of the blame for that, I suppose, because Kate has had a remarkable high school career. The 5'5 guard is a skilled performer who gets the job done at both ends of the floor. In fact, she is Minnesota's all-time steals leader who'll likely reach 1,000 for her career this week. She's closing in on 1,000 career rebounds, as well.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There's a good chance that Thayer will have another opportunity to showcase her skills on the big stage in March. The Mustangs are 12-1 and in position to get out of Section 8A where the contenders include Warren-Alvarado-Oslo, Sacred Heart and others. The Concordia-St. Paul commit leads the Eagles in scoring at 22 points per game.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='644896' first='Logan' last='Miller'] established a team single-game rebounding record last week. The 6'4 post, ranked.5th in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2028, had 25 boards in a game. The week prior she established a new mark for points in a single game with 41.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1124545' first='Amelia' last='Truty'] of Rochester Lourdes has had our attention all season as the 8th grader establishes herself as a strong prospect in the Class of 2030. Last week she scored 44 points in a win over Austin. That broke the Eagles' single-game scoring record established by 2020 graduate <strong>Alyssa Ustby</strong>, who went on to a standout career at North Carolina and now plays professionally in Italy.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Team on the rise: Prior Lake</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When the 2025-26 high school basketball season opened, I have to say that Prior Lake wasn't really on my radar. After graduating an outstanding 2025 class that included the likes of <strong>Bree Bowman</strong> (Colorado State), <strong>Haven Fisher</strong> (Tulsa), <strong>Brooklyn Holmberg</strong> (Northern State) and <strong>Alaya Carter</strong>, along with a change in coaching staff, it was assumed that the Lakers would need a little time to rebuild. Turned out they didn't need much time at all.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>After starting their season with five straight losses, Prior Lake has had two separate streaks where they won four out of five games, runs that included last week's upset of previously unbeaten Rosemount. Just 48 hours later the Lakers turned in another impressive performance in a 75-62 defeat of Eastview. Still under .500 at 8-10, you can toss those early performances out the window because the current Prior Lake squad is stout.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The alpha dog is [player_tooltip player_id='764229' first='Toni' last='Fisher'], the 16^th-ranked junior in Minnesota who leads the team at nearly 20 points per game, a 60% increase over last season. Her high-tempo, uber-energetic style of play is infectious. Toni has hops, pace and skill, and she can shoot it, too. She's joined by two talented workhorses in top-50 junior [player_tooltip player_id='764194' first='Fiona' last='Anttila'] and top-70 junior [player_tooltip player_id='657022' first='Ava' last='Brynteson']. Anttila was on fire against Rosemount, connecting on 8 of 10 attempts from beyond the arc. The pair are combining for over 20 points per game and are vital at both ends of the floor. Veterans <strong>Charlie Gardner</strong> and <strong>Aubrey Thoms</strong> both started when we watched on Thursday. Rising stars [player_tooltip player_id='1280969' first='Ady' last='LaValley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1243842' first='Mara' last='Segerstrom'] are making a very real impact ahead of schedule.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Prior Lake competes in section 2AAAA where Minnetonka is the presumed nominee for State. Because Waconia is having an outstanding season, Chanhassen is showing spurts of brilliance, and now Prior Lake is putting its act together, the picture has become muddy. With a highly-experienced coach like Ellen Thompson (Hopkins, Holy Family, Minnetonka, Macalester) at the helm, this Lakers crew is definitely sailing in the right direction.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
