Several teams were able to make a state playoff appearance while also being near or at the top of their respective conferences. One team was able to ride their season long momentum all the way to a final four trip. With that being said, who are some of the top returning guards in Wayne and Greene County to lookout for this season? Prep Girls Hoops NC looks at the best rising senior guards in the two counties.
Aleesha Boyette (Southern Wayne, 2021)
Aleesha Boyette, who led Southern Wayne in a number of categories, had an excellent junior season for the Saints in 2019-20. She’s a really good ball handler that likes to aggressively attack the basket while also being a knockdown three point shooter. When she was able to hit threes, the Saints were a tough team to beat this past season. After putting up nine points, three rebounds, and three steals per contest last year, you can expect her to have a really good senior season in Dudley.
Ty’lisha Maye (Southern Wayne, 2021)
One of Boyettes backcourt teammates, Ty’lisha Maye, made her mark with her hustle and energy. She was effective on both ends of the floor especially defensively where she was one of the conference leaders in steals per game. In a difficult Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A division, Maye and the Saints were able to win some big games down the stretch of the season to solidify their playoff spot. They’ll likely be back in the postseason this year with every player returning from last seasons squad.
Makiya Hobbs (Spring Creek, 2021)
Hobbs is one of the top returning scorers in Wayne County and tied for the team lead in that area with 12 points per game. She made a lot of plays in transition and hit a bunch of threes for a Spring Creek team that needed her to be responsible for most of the offense. Expect Hobbs’ numbers and her role to increase with the graduation of senior standout Belinda Carson, who’ll be playing at Lenoir CC next season.
Kaitlyn Smith (C.B. Aycock, 2021)
Another guard that could have a good senior year is C.B. Aycock’s Kaitlyn Smith. As a junior, she was the primary ball handler in an offense predicated on passing and cutting into the open area. The rising senior helped the Golden Falcons reach the state playoffs by becoming a consistent outside shooter and defender. She’ll be counted on once again for an Aycock team that could make more noise this season.
