This time it was the Hoosier Summer Invitational at Warsaw High School’s campus, including using their beautiful new 4-court fieldhouse. The event was loaded with most of the best teams/programs from the state of Michigan, as well as a handful of teams from Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Below is a look at nine Michigan prospects from the Classes of 2023 and 2024 who I thought stood out in last Saturday’s action when I was able to see them.
Paris Bass, 2023, 5-11 CF, Wayne Memorial H.S.
Paris is an incredibly long but somewhat thin athlete. She has really good North/South speed, fluidity, and some lateral quickness. She might even still grow a couple more inches. She is always around the ball and plays with a nice motor. Offensively, I would say she’s more of a slashing scorer who can attack from the perimeter or the mid-post, but she does shoot it okay in the mid-post, and I can see her eventually being consistent from the perimeter once she adds more strength. I also really like the impact her length and athleticism have at the defensive end, especially in trapping situations.

Faith really burst onto the scene this last year, and now she has drawn a considerable amount of interest from a number of Division-I programs. She has a broad frame, a great deal of strength, but she also has some length, she plays with a good motor, and she rim-runs as well as most girls her size. In the half-court, Faith does a nice job of establishing position early, and she has good hands and catches most everything thrown her way. She moves people with ease and finishes well at the rim. Defensively she’s a presence as well, as she blocks a number of shots because she’s bouncier than you’d think.

I’ve watched Makenna’s team play a few times, and while I’ve liked her upside, I think last weekend was the most I really appreciated her potential as a prospect. She has a great frame with some strength, she has solid length as well, and she’s a nice athlete in most directions. At times on this team, she can get caught inside for stretches, but to me she’s a versatile inside-out ’4’ who does have a nice shooting stroke around the perimeter. I think she’ll play as more of a mid-post to perimeter ’4’ at the next level, especially if she can improve her handle and sit down and defend guards on switches for a few seconds.

Cadence is a versatile, talented, offensive playmaker who is hard to label by a position. She is kind of a point forward, kind of a wing, and kind of a guard. She just does so many different things effectively for her team. She has good length, an athletically strong frame, and she moves well in all directions with a nice burst when she wants to get by a defender and get downhill to attack the basket. She plays with a lot of energy, she seeks out contact, and she earns repeated trips to the free throw line. I also think she does some really nice things at the defensive end. If she can develop a consistent 3-point shot, watch out.

Like her high school and travel teammate Paris Bass (above), Mayla is another extremely long, somewhat slender, but very athletic forward. Mayla also plays with a solid motor, she’s more of a slashing scorer right now as well, but she floats around the perimeter a lot more consistently looking for jumpers, and she has a bit better touch out there than Bass. Mayla handles it some and can push the ball in transition kind of like a point forward, plus she’s very versatile defensively. She’s quick enough to defend some guards, but she’s long and tall enough to take on most forwards as well. She has a great deal of potential.

I have seen Sarah several times over the Summer, and she has always shown a very high ceiling as a recruit. Last Saturday she struggled early on against a tough, and older, Sports City U team. But what impressed me the most was that she continued to battle when many players would have quit playing hard, and over the course of the middle third of the game, she made some standout plays that showed off her vast talent and potential. She is so incredibly long, very athletic and bouncy, and she has a nice all-around skillset to where I think she’ll be a face-up ’4’ at the next level.

We can sit here and debate whether or not there are more talented players on her travel team, but I feel like Layne is the engine that makes them go. She is a really nice athlete, especially North/South, she has a strong, athletic frame with some length, and she’s a tough-nosed, traditional point guard who plays with some physicality. Layne has a nice handle, she doesn’t get rattled often, and she plays with good pace. She can attack the basket straight-line for scores, she can find open teammates, plus she can bury shots from the perimeter. Defensively she works hard also, and she rebounds her position well.
Madelyn Weber, 2023, 5-11 PF/C, Hopkins H.S.
Last Saturday was my first time really noticing Madelyn, and I really like how she plays. She has a strong frame, but she also has a long frame and is built like someone closer to 6-1 or 6-2. Madelyn plays with a tremendous motor, she seeks contact, has a nose for the ball, and right now she plays more like a back-to-the-basket ’4/5’ inside of 10-feet. But she moves well enough and works hard enough to eventually become more of a face-up ’4’. She might already have some face-up skill and I didn’t see it in the game I watched. Defensively, she moves her feet well and can defend the perimeter, so that’s why I think she can play as more of a ’4’.
Devin Hagemann, 2024, 5-5 PG, Detroit Edison Public School Academy
Another Hagemann has arrived, and Devin is quite the little playmaker. She is extremely quick/fast, she has an athletic frame with some length at her size, and she plays much “older” than she is. I really like her tempo, poise, and feel for the game…you would think she was at least a Junior. She has a good handle, she’s a nice passer with good vision, but at times she’s almost too unselfish and over-passes. She is capable of knocking down a perimeter jumper or getting inside to score, but she is a pass-first kid. I was also impressed with her quick instincts defensively, as she is already elite at that end of the floor.
