Continue ReadingColumbia, South Carolina is the Palmetto State’s capital city and the Midlands’ flagship city. Right across the Congaree River from Columbia is the home of the Bearcats – Brookland-Cayce High School.
It once again served as the host site for the She Got Next Tournament. Brookland-Cayce utilized its two gyms and games were competed with two 16-minute halves in lieu of four eight-minute quarters.
Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to Brookland-Cayce – as did a number of teams from all portions and corners of the state. Here is a look at those from classes 2025 that made impressive showings at this weekend’s tournament.
Destinee Tiller – 2025 – Eau Claire HS – Even when Eau Claire’s two seniors depart after this season, the Shamrocks are destined to be in good hands as long as Tiller continues to sport the Eau Claire colors for the next few seasons. She was in the starting lineup for the Shamrocks against the Silver Foxes of Lamar and showcased a variety of talents. She can seemingly come from out of nowhere to make defensive plays. Being a point guard, she will set up the Shamrocks offense in the halfcourt as well as also take shots from long range. Tiller has a knack for being able to attack the rim as well. She finished with 11 points and six of those occurred in the first half.
Karlee Phelps Karlee Phelps 6'2" | C Gray Collegiate | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Gray Collegiate – Prep Girls Hoops recently confirmed that 2025’er Phelps was another transfer landed by the War Eagles and its coach Ashley Bruner – hence why Phelps was not with White Knoll at last week’s event at A.C. Flora. The Timberwolves will miss her as she can rebound on either end of the floor. Not to mention she is another 6-foot-2 big. Phelps only scored two points in Gray Collegiate’s contest against Westside, but expect those point totals to increase as the season rolls on. Between her and fellow freshman Kadence Walker-Lee Kadence Walker-Lee 5'10" | PF Gray Collegiate | 2025 State SC (formerly of Irmo), the War Eagles look to create plenty of problems for opponents in that frontcourt.
Kadence Walker-Lee Kadence Walker-Lee 5'10" | PF Gray Collegiate | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Gray Collegiate – Between star 2023 Maliyiah Mason Maliyiah Mason 6'0" | SF Gray Collegiate | 2023 State SC and Walker-Lee, the transfers the War Eagles landed from Irmo alone are enough to make Yellow Jackets aficionados frown when driving past Gray’s campus. Walker-Lee will draw her fair share of contact and will get to the free throw line. She is also very quick and can get from one end of the floor to the other with no problems. Walker-Lee also wins a great deal of rebounding battles, giving the War Eagles a force to be reckoned with (along with fellow 2025 big Karlee Phelps Karlee Phelps 6'2" | C Gray Collegiate | 2025 State SC ) in their frontcourt.
Aubrey Stevenson Aubrey Stevenson 5'7" | PG Rock Hill | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Legion Collegiate – As the Lancers have proven time and time again, coach Kevin King’s team is one that is not short on talent. And when that talent extends to a team’s freshman class – look out. Stevenson proved to be efficient in running the Lancers’ offense, including in a few occasions where she was guarded in iso situations. She connected with her midrange jumper and displayed how she can score, but takes a pass-first approach to the game. Stevenson is very active on defense and that activity can keep opposing ball handlers honest. An Indian Land transfer, she was Legion Collegiate’s second-leading scorer (11 points) in its game with A.C. Flora.
Serenity Woods Serenity Woods 5'7" | SG South Pointe | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Legion Collegiate – Transfers always happen in high school athletics – but the ones that occur from one part of the state to another can be especially challenging. Woods has arrived at the home of the Lancers from Cardinal Newman. She is one that opposing teams do not want to foul with how consistent she can be from the free throw line. Add that aspect of her game to being an overall threat to put points on the board and it is not hard to see why coach Kevin King was glad when Woods decided to trade in Cardinals red and black for Legion Collegiate’s blue and green. Woods scored 10 points in the Lancers’ win over A.C. Flora.
Aveion Walker Aveion Walker 5'10" | SF Denmark-Olar | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Denmark-Olar HS – When one team falls behind early 15-0 as was what happened with the Vikings vs. South Pointe, it can be easy for a team to wave the white flag, go back to the drawing board and strategize for the next game. Not Denmark-Olar and not Walker. She is quick with the ball and definitely is skilled at handling the rock even amongst a number of defenders. Walker can be creative with how she finds ways around defenders and can throw them off by shooting from range. She is a very unselfish player who consistently looks to get her teammates more involved. Her drawing contact and getting to the line was important in getting the Vikings back in a contest that appeared to be out of reach midway through the first half. In addition, she battles for rebounds. Walker finished Friday’s game with 11 points.
Lauren Jacobs Lauren Jacobs 5'9" | PG Heathwood Hall | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Cardinal Newman – The Cardinals’ matchup with the Bulldogs of Camden was overflowing with talented underclassmen. Jacobs, a freshman, was one of those and she set the tone for the Cardinals with the first made field goal of the game. She brought in rebounds and was true on one of her 3-point attempts in the first half. On one of Jacobs’ steals, she went from one end of the court to the other, then followed it up with another steal. She can get creative with how she finishes around the rim and will make her free throw tries. Jacobs finished with 20 points on Friday evening.
Braylin Mungo Braylin Mungo 5'7" | PG Camden | 2027 State SC – 2027 – Camden HS – Mungo has built up quite a profile for herself already and she is a seventh grader with a roster spot on head coach Natalie Jeffcoat Norris’ team. Mungo stays in go mode. Guard her whenever she has the ball from downtown because she is very accurate from long range. Fouling her and placing her at the line for foul shot tries may not be part of the plan either as she will sink her freebies. Mungo got the start on Friday evening for Camden against Cardinal Newman and was the team’s second-leading scorer with 13 points.
