Several players stepped up defensively for the Comets and even offensively despite the points being at a premium. While the Knights held the lead for most of the contest, Clayton responded in the fourth quarter to pull away. Prep Girls Hoops NC takes a look at the standouts from this battle of Johnston vs. Wake County programs.
Darrionna Howard Darrionna Howard 6'1" | PF Clayton | 2023 State NC (Clayton 2023 forward)
It was another solid performance from the always consistent Darrionna Howard Darrionna Howard 6'1" | PF Clayton | 2023 State NC who holds offers from several division one programs across the Carolina’s. Howard finished with 14 points on 6-10 shooting, nine rebounds, and three blocks. She hit a couple of big shots in the fourth quarter to keep the Knights from coming back and forced opponents into tough shots on defense. Howard continues to be a matchup problem for most defenses because of her ability to handle the ball at her size.
Kayla Robertson (Clayton 2023 forward)
Despite limited shots, Kayla Robertson was still able to impact the game with eight points and three rebounds for the Comets. Most of her biggest plays came in the second half and she’s important to the Comets team because she can guard one through five defensively and facilitate her teams offense when needed.
D’Miyah McGuire (Knightdale 2023 forward)
Junior forward D’Miyah McGuire was Knightdale’s standout performer in this game thanks to her play on the interior. She scored on the inside, protected the rim and rebounded well for the Knights leading the way with 10 points, four rebounds, and three blocks. McGuire is a strong post presence for this team and should be one of the top performers in the NAC this season.
