Dunbar’s Elise Ellison-Coons has the combination of forward size and guard skills that college coaches covet. Coming off a Sophomore season at Dunbar where she averaged just shy of 18 points and a little over 10 rebounds per game, Elise is moving right into AAU season with the West Virginia Thunder. I recently caught up with Ellison-Coons to talk basketball and recruiting.
Ellison-Coons told me that she can do a little bit of everything on the court, “I would say that I’m a very versatile player. I can defend the post and guard position & I can score from inside and out and use my rebounding ability to help me do so. I would say that I’m a very solid player on both ends of the court.” Elise also is working to become better with the ball in her hands to be a more well rounded player, “My strengths are my ability to rebound and attacking the basket. I would say some improvements would be to tighten up my ball-handling.” In her high school season, Ellison-Coons had to step her game way up in order for Dunbar to compete in the tough 11th region and ended up with an 18-13 record and a district championship, “We lost some big Seniors last year so I really had to step up and lead my team. I was pleased with my performance this past season, I averaged a double double. There are a couple of games that stand out but the most important ones are game were when I got my first triple double and scored my 1,000th point.”
Next up for Elise is her 16u AAU season and she has chosen to play with Under Armour team West Virginia Thunder. She has lofty expectations for her spring and summer, “I expect to continue to grow as an overall player, being able to understand the game more. I also expect to develop my offensive game more, becoming a go-to player.” Along with a big AAU season come hopes for some love from colleges. Ellison-Coons told me that she doesn’t have any offers yet but “I have a few mid majors interested in me.” When I asked Elise about her goals for the rest of her career, she gave a thoughtful answer, focusing on the big picture, “I want to continue to develop my game, focusing on the things I need to improve on and continuing to develop my strengths even more.” With the kind of potential Elise Ellison-Coons has, she is a player that needs to be on the radar of college coaches and hardcore basketball fans all across the state of Kentucky.
